JK Heltec active BMS and waking it up

Apologies if this has already been discussed, I haven't seen an answer to this, so here I go. I'm new to these smart BMSs.

Under what conditions does this BMS require to be woken up? ie. Is it for the first time it is connected? If I have a battery shutoff, will it require waking again? Does it remain active until disconnected from the balance leads?

This isn't the first BMS that I've seen discussed with this behavior. Why does it need to be kicked awake in the first place?

Bump. I'd also like to know because I got a bunch of these in the mail today so I guess I'll be figuring it out myself.
