I've been contemplating making a 48v battery bank from Gen 1 or 2 Leaf batteries. The wiring is pretty straight forward, but what I'm not as familiar with is BMS and the battery chemistry. Seems that some don't use a BMS at all, and some use a 14S on each module bank. If you need a separate BMS on each module bank, that severely cuts into any cost savings of DIY. What is the consensus? Also, the modules I'm looking at are approx 50-65% capacity. Is there any information out there on approx cycles and calendar life remaining for modules that are at 50ish % capacity? Also, what's the safety like of the Leaf batteries? Haven't seen much concern with it, but I'm sure it's not as safe as LifePo. Thoughts? Thank you in advance

IIRC the Leaf is Li-ion hence the 14S BMS.

Sure as heck I wouldn't go the no BMS route, with second-life packs the cells could well be less-than-similar capacity wise, overcharge a Li-ion and ....

Even with a BMS I would have the packs well away from anything that might be damaged if it went "whoosh".
