Hey GUys

What battery do you use that is CSA certified for Solark15k ? I am looking for something that can power home in evenings, we are still on grid so the grid can supplement if the battery is below 40% or so.. I looked at Fortress eValut, but they are quite expensive.

Thanks

You find that all batteries which are ULC/CSA (for Canada) certified will be expensive and likely a bit more than if just Certified/Listed for US only. Several companies do have UL/ULC/CSA/ETL certifications but "ouch" when it comes to $.

Have a look at Volthium: Designed, engineered & made in Canada using Canadian Cells (Made in PQ). These are all certified to highest specs for International uses... https://volthium.com/en/batteries/ We do make LFP Cells in Canada and have for a few years but it's all spoken for and when rarely available they are far from cheap compared to Chinese made cells.

I have to ask:
Does the requirement for CSA Listed batteries come from "somewhere" or is this a personal want ?
If Grid Connected - Hydro One and the people doing the inspections CAN be a nightmare as most haven't got a handle on the DC side of life. Even worse is Ontario they like to use old rules and come out with serious stoopid. IF not Grid Connected (FIT pushing to grid) then life can be a LOT easier & simpler plus a boat load cheaper too ! IF Off-Grid then you get the better end of the costs shtick. Hydro One is 1km away from me and staying put - never again ! BTW: If the codes have not been updated yet (I believe it is supposed to update on April 01) work towards the new regs and rules BUT do not expect any inspectors to be up to speed on them, so be prepared.

FYI: Some inspectors WILL Still default to old Lead Acid Battery rules and force them out of the home or any habitable structure or insist on ridiculous battery compartments with venting intended for FLA. A Neighbour just had that battle with a total moe-ron (old inspector) who insisted that Lithium off-gasses Hydrogen and blows up houses - he insisted that he pulls his battery bank out of the house (previously approved) and put it into a concrete bunker and rejected the solar upgrade on that basis (and not a FIT installation either, was only using grid for battery backup charging). Neighbour was going through the circus again because of his home insurance, he's now classed offgrid and changed companies to never dseal with it again.

HI Steve,

Please see the attached image, which is reply from ESA Technician. The CSA bit was what my installer for solar panels suggested. I was looking at SOK/Jakiper batteries. Sorry I am not electrically inclined by any means, but would these ones or Volthium meet the new code requirements?

We have a Grid connection to Hydro One, unfortunately we are not planning to cut that as I have no Idea how much solar we would be producing.

Regards
Tanmay

SOK are UL. Are they CSA? Unsure.

@HighTechLab can you shed some light on this?

the Volthium 12v drop ins are “reasonably” priced if compared to Battleborn.

the 24v rack is about 1400 more than a trophy, or sok. They don’t even list the price of the 49v, lol.

im partial to tier 1 stuff (controllers and inverters) but I don’t know if the price premium is worth a “listed” battery??

the only thing dumber than an Ontario inspector is a manitoba inspector.
