Some Lowes stores are clearing out their Southwire brand, wire by the foot, at 75% off.

An employee told me they aren't going to be selling wire by the foot any longer.

This caught my eye as I want to run 200 amps to my detached garage. At most I'll need 50 feet of wire. I plan on using it for EV Charging and future-proofing.

I see 4 options and I'm wondering what people think.

2x Southwire 1/0-1/0-1/0-2 Stranded Aluminum SER(125 amp each, $5.51/ft, $551 max) (None is 75% off around me. Here's hoping!)

4x Southwire SIMpull 2/0 -AWG Black Stranded Copper THHN wire (195 amp each, $5.96/ft, $298 max)

4x Southwire SIMpull 3/0 -AWG Black Stranded Copper THHN wire (225 amp each, $7.44/ft, $372 max)

Southwire SWEETBRIAR 4/0-4/0-2/0 Stranded Aluminum URD + Southwire SIMpull 3/0 -AWG Black Stranded Copper THHN wire (240/225 Amp, $5.49/ft, $275 max)

I'm of course open to suggestions.

Just grabbed 75Ft 8GA for my hand truck build...under $20. All other sizes are either already gone, or not on clearance at my store.
edit: yep, I'm no fool...it won't take 75Ft to build my hand truck! lol
 
I recently got 200ft of 10ga to run to some solar panels. When I asked the employee why such a basic and general-purpose wire was on clearance, their response was just that the distributor likely had a surplus and needed Lowe's to get rid of what they had so they could ship more. Your explanation makes more sense. I did have to order from two separate Lowes stores to get all three colors I needed. Too bad I had already finished 90% of the expensive initial wiring for the inverters, like $1000-worth.

You are awesome for sharing this. I ordered 475' of 8-14AWG for future projects.

Do you really need 200A? If not I'd go with option 1, otherwise 4 or 5; if 5 I think you can use something smaller than 3/0 for the 4th wire but let an expert chime in.
 
Of course. I needed about 40 feet of 8/3 a couple weeks ago, and a 50' precut roll was cheaper than 40' by the foot.

75% off or at 75% of the original price (25% off)?
 
Is it only certain cable sizes and/or in store only? Their 3/0 copper THHN is at least $3/ft more then what you can get elsewhere.
 
My local lowes had none on sale.
The other lowes showed 607 ft of one but when i went they couldnt find any of it
 
I just noticed that it appears to be that only Copper wire is 75% off. At least for everything I was looking at.

I also just notice that the price is in store only as I tried to order 500 foot for delivery which the website said should have give an extra 50 cents a foot discount, but it reverted to the full price with some much lower discount.

It varies by store and my store has had this on sale a few weeks ago. However my store has returned to original prices. I was able to get some 1/0 copper wire yesterday because they had the sale sticker still displayed it was original price at checkout but manager honored displayed price.
 
There something changing with Lowes and SouthWire. Few weeks ago I saw a 250' roll of outdoor speaker wire marked down from $120 to $47 so I grabbed one. It rang up at $29 should of bought both rolls.
 
My closest store only had 3 things 75% off and nothing I needed

10awg thhn
16/2 speaker wire
20/2 doorbell wire

The next closest store didn't have anything Southwire marked down.. :(
 
Crazy, didn’t really need it, but just ordered 200ft of black 10awg thhn, $32. Just had to chose a lowes that had it in stock 35 min away vs 20 min away.

I've wasted $32 on stupider things.
 
Man they have 1/0 wire on sale.I might have to buy a few hundred feet and just stash it. If I get my shop built it's probably gonna be 100ft from the house, so being able to have the wire on hand to run out there would be awesome.

The 1/0 would probably be super overkill, but at this price... I wouldn't have to worry about much voltage drop either.

15a circuits gonna get 10awg and it better like it!

My 200ft order is already to be picked up.

For shits and giggles, say 10awg is .032#/ foot, at scrapping price of $3.30/lbs (once stripped)

200ft is only $21 in scrap value, it’s almost like they are giving it away for free. lol
