Background: I had a fire caused by a loose battery connection wipe out 24 Rolls 2V 1450s. They were towards the end of their useful life, but the fire was preventable and should not have happened. Thread on the unfortunate incident is here: https://diysolarforum.com/threads/battery-fire-and-meltdown.20332/

I've replaced these with 24 1275 AGMs and rigged the system up today. Everything is good so far but have noticed that my Midnite Solar battery temp sensors got toasted and will need to be replaced, as will my Magnum MEBTS15 temp sensor. These will take a few more days to come in and with the temps remaining in mid teens (Celcius), I'm not too worried about it.

However, one of my MidNite Solar charge controllers external Turno fans is sperging out. It typically only runs during heavy bulk charge but is basically on non-stop. Batt remote says 32 degrees C (which is wrong), and FETS at 26.6 and PCB at 32.2. the controller next to it has higher remote temp at 37.3 (also wrong) with FETS at 46.7 and PCB at 48.3 - and the fan isn't budging.

What gives? If this is faulty battery sensor issue, why would the charge controller fan go nuts? Any suggestions before I call Midnite? I'm of half the mind to unplug the fan because of the racket.

Thanks,

Midnite sells Fan Kits for the Classics with everything you need to replace the existing fans. The Battery Temp Sensor is also available.

Thanks Steve.
I guess I'm still stuck at the question of whether this is caused by fried battery sensors, or if there is something wrong with the fans. And if so, would a malfunctioning fan cause the controller to just constantly run the fan? Does that make sense?

A bad sensor shouldn't make the fans run. The sensor only adjusts the voltage setpoint. There is something wrong. Call MidNite tech support.

If the turbo fan is constantly running, even at night, then the little transistor that switches the fan on and off might be shorted.

I dealt with Midnite Solar tech, who advised that fried sensors actually do make the fans run constantly. I replaced the sensors and voila! problem solved.
*whew*

Ahhhh yes ! True.

At least when that temp sense is shorted, the battery temperature in the Classic reverts to 25 degrees C settings.

Good deal
