MPPT Charge Limit/"Upper Limit Voltage"

I am currently designing a solar system for our vintage travel trailer and I have a question about some MPPT charging terminology. In one of Will Prowse's videos in which he is explaining the idea of setting "upper limit voltage" he mentions that some cheap MPPT charge controllers might not be able to set "upper limit voltage". As he does this he flashes a photo of the Renogy Rover charger. (

Looking through the manual for the Renogy however, it appears you are able to set your battery as "USER" and then you have control over the "Equalizing", "Boost", "Float", "Over-discharge return", & "Over-discharge" voltages. With this in mind, does this mean that you effectively do have control of the "upper limit voltage" by setting the "Equalizing" and "Boost" voltages to whatever your upper limit is?

If not, what is the difference between altering your "equalizing" and "boost" settings vs. something like "charge limit" on the MT50? (Will makes a video of doing this too

If you are able to control the upper limit with the Renogy, is it safe to assume that Will just made a mistake showing that controller when he was talking about controllers that could not set upper limit voltage? Or that Renogy updated their controller to allow user settings.

Thank you very much in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Rather than assuming he made a mistake, consider that you assumed the presence of the Renogy on the screen at the time he issued a general caution indicated it applied to the Renogy even though he didn't explicitly call out the Renogy.

Furthermore, he indicated that all the controllers he recommends can be easily adjusted. If you look at his recommendations, Renogy is there.
