I spent the afternoon drafting up this contract for companies that want to work with me. What do you guys think? What else should I add? Once this is finalized, I am going to share it with other youtubers. I think it will help pushing things in the right direction for everyone.

For DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse

Introduction
If you think you can pay a youtuber for a positive review, you are in for a surprise. The moment a content creator signs a restrictive contract and then posts biased content, their channel is done. And so is your business. Viewers are smart and will not forget. And neither will I.

What you need is a honest and informed review. It will give you the best bang for your buck around, and it will help you to improve your product and compete in the current market. The competition is fierce, and you must aim to deliver a perfect product. My channel can make that happen. My viewers want the best and I need you to deliver that.

If you wish for me to showcase a product or help you deliver the best, these are my fees:

Product Review Video Fees
  • $12,000 for a basic product review video. This applies to most 12V and 48V batteries, inverters and more
  • $20,000 for multi-battery, high voltage or battery/hybrid inverter reviews.
Educational Video and Consult Fees
  • $20,000 for large installation "how-to" videos. Are customers complaining about system setup? Tired of paying increasing costs for customer support? Let me create a video that will teach your customers everything they need to know. Wiring, communication setup and more.
  • $4,000 for product release consult. The product will be inspected, and I will give a list of suggestions for improvement. This is my best deal, and highly recommended doing BEFORE a product release occurs.
Payment Methods
  • Bank wire has the lowest fees and is most popular. Email willprowseiv@gmail.com for wire instructions.
  • I also accept multiple forms of payment with stripe and paypal, but the fees are high. You will pay these extra fees, and they are calculated by the program.
  • It is not required, but I can send out an invoice.

What to Expect with a Product Review
  • I will not start testing OR reviewing your product until I have received the video fee AND the product in my lab.
  • I will do everything possible to find problems with your product. I will start with basic tests. I critically evaluate the product's build quality, component selection, documentation and how it compares to the competition.
  • If I find multiple major issues with the product, I will end the video early. You will not get a refund for sending me a low quality device that fails multiple tests. And I will publish my video, and it will not be taken down. A new applicable fee will be assessed for follow-up videos displaying corrections/improvements.
  • If your product does well in my testing, I will repeat my tests and try to find something wrong. This will usually require a long video, and it will usually rank very well. If your product does exceptionally well, I will do long term testing and watch the reviews. If I find a problem later on, I will make a second video or post about the newly found issues.
  • If I find a strange issue, I will reach out for an explanation. If your company thinks the issue is actually a "feature", I will mention that in the video (common for companies to make excuses, and myself and the viewers see right through it).
  • Both parties agree all disputes will be settled by arbitration.
  • Most product reviews will require a tear down. Especially the batteries.
  • I will not sign your sponsorship contracts or NDA's. I am not your employee.
  • Every video will use lab calibrated test equipment, and I will verify my results by testing multiple times. If I get a bad test result, I will usually test on a second machine and I will test accuracy of equipment with a fluke meter.
  • I will do everything I can to mention other companies products in my video to compare to your product. If your product is truly exceptional, I will make it shine. If it is a horrible option in the market for the price, I will tell my viewers that.
  • I will share personal opinions about software and usability. And aesthetics. These points I cannot substantiate with test results. But they will be mentioned.
  • If your product fails miserably, I will list my own affiliate links to higher quality products below your video. I will also link my product recommendation website. If your product does well, it will be listed at the top of the link list.
  • If I find a problem with your product, and you make a public response, I will share it in the video and make it known. If you fix the issue quickly and/or refund customers that bought the product, it will make your company shine. If you are smart, a bad review can actually be an opportunity.
  • Reviewer is not responsible for loss of revenue, reputational harm, or other damages resulting from an honest review.

What is Guaranteed
  • Product name will be listed in video title.
  • Your product will be the main focus of the video, even if other products are mentioned.
  • Basic feature overview in the beginning of the video. Give me a list of features that you want me to mention in the video before I start filming.

Affiliate Program Requirements
  • Your company has the choice to host an affiliate program. I will require that the product that is tested is part of an affiliate program. If you have multiple distributors, I will choose who I want to work with and link to. This is usually determined by my viewers. I will always choose the distributor that my viewers like most.
  • Typical affiliate commissions are below:
  • Batteries: 6-15% (depending on sales volume and certifications)
  • Inverters: 8-12%
  • Solar Panels: 2-5%
  • Solar Panel Racking: 10%
  • Tools: 10%
  • Affiliate payouts should be monthly unless you have a low sales volume. If sales volume is high, payment should be done with bank wire to avoid fees.
  • If a distributor is doing a bad job and my viewers complain, I will change my affiliate link to a better distributor.

Product Disposal
These products cost a lot to transport and dispose of, and I do not need them. I will donate all products to members of www.diysolarforum.com. Members need to provide their own transportation to pick them up. Products will not be sent back to sender.

Time Schedule
Each review is different. Some products take an afternoon to review, some take a few months. If I cannot finish my testing or post my review, I will refund 100% of all funds sent initially. If a video takes longer than 60 days and there is a major hang up, I will issue a full refund.

Exceptions
  • If my viewers ask me to review a product multiple times, I will pay for it myself and I will not charge a video fee.
  • If my viewers find a problem with a product that I previously reviewed (and it passed my tests), I will make a new video showcasing the newly found issues. I will also check to see if the hardware or software has changed.
  • If I find a low cost product that seems too good to be true, I will buy it myself and review it. These videos get a lot of views because they usually have major issues. I also use these low quality products to educate on why the lowest priced electrical gear can be extremely dangerous.

Honestly, the $4000 pre review thing seems like a smoking deal – I was going to ask if you offered that. Has always blown my mind the companies that would pay you money to review a junk product. I think we all know the reality is that many reviewers just like free stuff and fear bad reviews will get them cut off.

NDA: i assume you will agree to not post the review until a date, such as Launch date.

Affiliate program: what if they don't have one? You seem to require one.

Product release consult: usually done during development. Right before release is a little late.

Honestly your model is perfect if you don't sound "advertise-y", and the main reason is that you already have a huge following so your customers can be already sourced from the following itself; and I mean even from anyone reading now; you don't need to say to those people "give me X amount of money to show your product" because they already know what you will do (because they know your videos).

PS I'm actually impressed how much they're willing to pay; though it's not exactly the most typical situation; you are probably the most popular youtuber on solar (DIY or not).

NDA: i assume you will agree to not post the review until a date, such as Launch date.
That is certainly reasonable.. he should probably include that.
Affiliate program: what if they don't have one? You seem to require one.
I think he likes those residuals.. it's where he probably makes most of his money. If they can't set up their own residual program, maybe they should distribute their product through one of the places that he can get one from, like Amazon or maybe Current Connected.
Product release consult: usually done during development. Right before release is a little late.
I think he just wanted to tell them it's best to do this type of video before the product is actually available for sale to customers. He's saying it's better to fix the glitches before unleashing it on the world. He might want to be clearer on this one, or rename it.

By the way if the purpose of the text is to tell those those companies that you're not willing to act as an ad service, I doubt they'll all get the message. I believe some of them assume you'll act like an ad service whatever you say initially and then they'll complain/withdraw if you don't.

If I find multiple major issues with the product, I will end the video early. You will not get a refund for sending me a low quality device that fails multiple tests. And I will publish my video, and it will not be taken down. If you wish to fix the issues and send me a second product to test, I will charge another $12,000 video fee.
I would reword this section, emphasis 'sole discretion' to post/remove videos that fail to meet basic goals of the product, require a new fee to post a follow-up vid displaying corrections/improvements.

Every video will use lab calibrated test equipment, and I will verify my results by testing multiple times. If I get a bad test result, I will usually test on a second machine and I will test accuracy of equipment with a fluke meter.
aka 'Best Effort' to portray the issue as I find, and have the ability to confirm using the calibrated test equipment I have at my disposal in the testing lab. All testing in good faith and presented with evidence, with sole discretion to edit content or present alternative explanations for perceived results, etc.

WRT the preamble, I would establish a new balance: a 'review' as is commonly known on Youtube, versus a 'critique', which is more in line with what I do...I critically evaluate the product, its fitness for duty, build quality, component evaluation, documentation and how it compares to the competition. etc. I attempt to remove barriers and buyer hesitation by giving in-depth analysis of the product to give my viewers an educational understanding of the advantages, and potential pitfalls, of your product's experience.

But I would start with a brief bio, how you are uniquely qualified (published, Youtube tenure, etc.), then add the above...

Just my 2 c's:

- "During the negotiations regarding the review, the company could provide info of the specific qualities, usage cases and other specific info of the product, not covered in publicly available manuals, but it's not guaranteed this will be covered in the review" - the emphasis here is on "could";

- "During the negotiations regarding the review, the list of initial tests will be available upon request" - to avoid some misunderstandings later.

I think the “pre review” price is a bit low to be honest. Some of those consults can be weeks of back and forth after detailing the initial problems. So in my opinion you should put a cap on it somehow, or maybe raise the price. Granted you wouldn’t have the time spent in filming and editing. Still seems low though.

Giving away a lot of your secret sauce here, Will. What makes you unique is a differentiator in the marketplace. If everyone was a clone of you, your value may decline (however unlikely) if that makes sense. But I appreciate your transparency that’s for sure.

What about products you buy with your own money? Isn't that really the only way you can be sure it's from a typical production run and not "specially prepared"?

The company selling the product has no say in those videos. As long as he is telling the truth, and can back up any claims, he is good.

  • If I find a low cost product that seems too good to be true, I will buy it myself and review it. These videos get a lot of views because they usually have major issues. I also use these low quality products to educate on why the lowest priced electrical gear can be extremely dangerous.
I mean you make your point clear, but i find it to be a little 'hard worded'. The language seems to be influenced by bad experiences and that could hurt vendors' dispositions to do business with you.
My most important suggestion would be to try to put some sugar on it.
