The only problem with using that as an example is that back then America was not a huge importer of goods from overseas and we were not the high income heavy consumers we are today.
In this day and age very few countries that depend on Manufacturing can just ignore the US market.

Marketing 101 - it is far easier to keep the customers you have than it is to find new ones.

It’s taken 70 years to build our current global trade system & supply chains so unwinding this will be an enormous task, if indeed it’s possible. Many of the largest American corporations are completely dependent on foreign suppliers & manufacturing, it’s what las made them so profitable & the low prices of consumer goods are baked in to wage levels for their own employees.

You miss the point. It’s simply a safe staging area for the illegals trip back to their countries. They can cycle through weekly. It’s not a hotel.

They cannot cycle through weekly. Our system doesn't work that fast. The typical length an illegal stays in detention varies a lot but it averages usually 30-60 days. So if the goal is to expel 15,000,000 immigrants by end of Trump's presidency that means they need a detention capacity to hold somewhere between 300,000 to 600,000 illegals.

Currently we have a detention capacity to hold 47,000 illegals. In order to achieve this goal Trump will need to increase this capacity by an order of magnitude and that's if he could magically achieve it overnight. The longer this takes the worse the calculus gets since he has less time to get this done.

I'm not trying to make an argument for or against immigrants here, though I do have opinions on that. I'm just trying to point out that this is going to be very expensive. To put this is probably going to cost double the amount we sent to Ukraine in military aid.

The market started to implode and congress threatened to reign him in. So he dropped it. And when he figures out a way to save face with China he'll drop those too.

Of course because he's senile he'll completely forget this and try it again a few months from now.

now, I'm not suggesting you watch the whole video, I fast forwarded a bit but when he repeated the debunked lie - yes it's a lie - that Canada charges 250% or 270% on US dairy products I gave up. This is like a mix between Saddam Hussein & Hugo Chaves, but on what fucking drug I know not. The damage that Trump has inflicted in the US & global economy is yet to be seen but one thing is sure, US credibility has taken a massive blow.
