I am not really sure, that your USB tester is accurate at low mA. Once established and without excessive operation, but not sleeping, you should not need more than 25 mA.
The current consumption of an ESP8266 highly depends also on the software. The WiFi operation being the biggest power hog.

By the way: the ESP8266 is best powered from 3,3V.
