I have a Renogy panel and I have never tampered with the cables. See photo. Note the connect gender.

Now, see my SCC and note the gender of the positive wire:

They are bass ackwards, IMHO. I guess I could reverse the leads at the SCC and it would work. What do you think? My long cables are Bouge RV. I haven't installed any MC4 connections personally.

Those cables didn’t come with the SCC. You either need to source the correct cables, mark those appropriately and swap them around, or make up your own.

Pretty standard issue, happens all the time.

I always keep this drawing handy that includes MC3 & MC4 layout

So changing the red/black wires on your charge controller would fix it, but the colors would be off.
Might be better to get the right connectors on the red & black wires to avoid confusion and label it "charge controller side" or something.

I posted the following to another post............... To confirm the polarity of your wires - either at the panel or at the PV side of your solar charge controller (SCC) before you connect to your SCC .....................

To positively determine the positive and negative connectors on a panel use a multi-meter. Set the voltage to DC. Put the positive lead from your meter into one connector and the negative lead into the other connector. If you see a negative reading on the meter, your positive lead from your meter is in negative connector. Reverse your leads into the connectors. You should see a positive reading. This indicates that your positive lead from your meter is inserted into the positive connector.
