As I mentioned in an earlier post, I read the book "The Death Of Expertise" by Tom Nichols. There is a perfect storm of psychological phenomena underlying our current situation but one of them is simply the need for certainty and/or an agent of evil to villainize when you combine fear and uncertainty. You can see in many of the posts attacking science and the vaccine, an underlying demand for certainty (about the effectiveness of the vaccine, masks, distancing) that simply cannot be given in the face of an unknown. That void is filled by conspiracy and a belief that answers do exist. Someone must be to blame! Add to that the tribalism and the politicization of this issue and it is no wonder we have threads like this. Experts are not always right and this is especially true when making educated guesses about prospective outcomes. However, experts, especially the consensus of experts, are correct much more often than the anxious masses or right-wing blogs trying to get hits.
