PSA: Caution for new buyers: EG4 Flexboss21 is extremely loud

I'm posting a public service announcement for new, inexperienced owners like myself who are considering the EG4 Flexboss21 inverter. It can be installed either outside or inside, and this is a strong caution on installing it inside.

The Flexboss21 has small, high-speed industrial fans that spin up during light-moderate loads, generally starting at 6kWp of PV input. They are extremely loud. The spec sheet says "Noise Emission (Typical) < 50db@ 3' " - that's extremely misleading (and I dare say, legally baloney as well). I get readings of over 65-72dbA from 3 feet away, which is an increase of 200%+ in noise level, as each 10db higher is 100% increase in noise. If the FB21 can support 21kWp of PV input, then 6kWp is at best a minimal load and certainly fits with the "Typical" definition. It's also annoying as the level of noise oscillates with load variations.

I had this installed into my basement, right under my kitchen. I had it installed later after I purchased it early, because I was also replacing my aging roof and wanted the best possible conditions for my home solar install. So when the inverter starts up with morning sunlight, that noise pervades my entire house - extremely annoying. I tried to reason with Signature Solar to get a replacement for something I had no idea about until it actually went into operation, but they took a cheap way out by saying it was 180 days past purchase date and the inverter was working as designed (very disappointed in the lack of support & care for a new owner). Not coincidentally, they didn't allow my review on their site about the loud noise levels of this inverter.

So caution to all newbie buyers: if you want to install this inside your house, please be aware of the noise level! I personally would say it's really meant for outside, where you can annoy your neighbors, or maybe inside with sound-insulated areas, like a detached garage. I'm a little sensitive to higher-pitch noises, as with past work I've done, that meant either something was going to fail or was overloaded and needed correction. But I wish this had spelled out clearly to me in advance, as I would definitely NOT have purchased this for my inside location.

Can you build a box around it with insulation and ducting to dampen the noise? They should make a better design seems like lot of complaints about fan noise with EG4.

Welcome to 2 months ago - https://diysolarforum.com/threads/flexboss21-overheating-especially-during-battery-charging.103676/

Sorry you were not aware of this prior.

A nice long article for you to read and get mad at EG4 about. FWIW they still have not updated their fan stepping properly.

Also what ever you do avoid the new firmware at this time until they fix their bugs - https://diysolarforum.com/threads/new-eg4-12k-18k-flexboss-firmware-faab-2122.108200/
Ah, thanks for the history; I've got some interesting (maybe infuriating) reading ahead. I hope EG4 fixes their issue, but I've already purchased (and lost money, I guess, from the FB21) a new inverter. EG4 needs to realize, or keep in mind, that good support is how you keep customers after the initial acquisition.

You’re not wrong…. transparency is very important, especially when they gave a different spec on their release information than what was shipped

In addition, they should communicate with their customers and have their resellers notify users that there is an ideal placement of this device based off of noise and heat.

From what everyone says this is louder than the FB18 by a decent amount which is bizarre (guessing different fans)

Every user is different and every situation is different, but for me, I don’t have any input solar yet as I’m still building out my system.

I’m peak shaving with battery and charging with grid after peak rates. It’s saving me over $100 a month and it will be over $300 a month once I get solar installed (cash flowing this debt free)

I have limited my battery charge rate to 60 to keep the fans off and I have attached an external fan to the top of my flex box to keep it cool

Since these fans are stepped and not a linear controlled device, they could add logic to allow you to have more control over the fan speed.

If you do not want to hear the fans based off of your consumption on the battery side for charging, you may want to look at limiting the charge speed

I know it’s not a perfect answer but it’s something that works for me.

If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would put this outside facing my annoying neighbor so they can listen to it. 24 7 365.

Since I do have a grid boss, I can in theory move this inverter more than 100 feet away if I really wanted to and I may end up doing that at some point.

I put mine in my garage and I regret even putting it there, but it’s going to live there for now since I already took the time and spent the money on the wiring

I will say that I don’t hear it at all even when the fans are going full tilt and the garage closed since I just insulated the space, however, I now have a new problem because I am generating a ton of heat in a insulated space with no way of venting it!

But like you, I would have never put this in a house or a living space in there should be some sort of warning or OSHA notification about hearing and temperature based off of it being in a livable space

tag me on what you end up doing, and I’m curious

Good to know, thanks. You could make air ducts and use external squirrel cage blower instead of those fans. Might have to fool the inverter with fake fan tachometer signal or remove and place fans in soundproof box while leaving them connected. But its pretty bad that EG4 lies in their datasheet about noise levels. And yes, not stating max noise dBa value is a lie by omission.

Hi!
I hope you're well!

I’m sorry to hear of the inconvenience this has caused. I understand how frustrating noise can be. While our policy doesn’t allow returns after 180 days unless there's a defect, we do make exceptions for unopened items with a restocking fee for store credit. However, once a unit is installed and is working as intended by the manufacturer, after that 180 days, we're unable to accept it for return.

I'm tagging @EG4TechSolutionsTeam to see if there is anything they can suggest to help reduce the volume. (Guys? ☺️)

We truly appreciate your feedback, and we're happy to help however we can!

Can you or EG4 ship me some FB18 fans for my FB21 (assuming they are the same size) since the FB18's are of newer design and are quieter?

I'm even willing to pay for them + shipping to fix this.

Assuming that the "ITEM" doesn't perform as advertised that's a pile a C...
If it's rated for XX db and produces XXX db that is definitely "not performing as advertised".
I hope you don't sell to states where someone can bring you to small claims court over this as you will be doing a LOT of travel to "defend your policy" pretty soon.

Or the UK, where we have consumer protections in law which don't require consumers to directly take action personally.

Giving misleading technical specs would make the item "not as described", and very probably "not fit for purpose" -- if the stated spec is "can be used indoors because it is quiet enough" and the actual device is "must be installed in soundproof bunker or outdoors because it sounds like a jet taking off" ...

I would like to point out one of the solar “influencers” recently installed a flexboss 18 AFTER having a Flexboss 21

They then limited the FB21 to under 6000 watts to prevent the fans from going up to 100%

They then added a FB18 and split their pv inputs to 2 inverters so the FB18 did the bulk of the load and did it quieter.

@EG4TechSolutionsTeam - can we buy fans for the Flexboss 18?

Link for what I’m taking about -

Contemplating installing the flex boss 21 outside my bedroom window, sharing the same wall as my head board. Am I going to lose sleep over this?

It's not the fans.

It's the ridiculous fan profile that is inadequate as we've all seen from these units throttling pv input.

That fix to limit pv is not a fix lol. That's a broken product.

Fans not kicking in until 75C is unacceptable.

Unacceptable for it's intended use.

Unacceptable noise level.

Unacceptable number of failing units and rmas.

Totally unacceptable not even a peep has been heard from anyone at eg about fixing the issue.

No statement.
No firmware upgrade.

Just lots of rmas, shipping out the exact same units...

Keep it below 6000w, the apparent fan ON threshold, and the fb21 may well overheat. This forum has several fb21 'heat' threads.

Sounds like in the we're all guinea pigs for all these "latest and greatest" companies. When it comes to support actually fixing issues they all disappear in the bushes and pass the buck around / apply band-aids while hoping for the customer to "get used to the issue" or plain "go away".

... or last long enough to make it outside the warranty window.

That's the business model, and unfortunately the only way to fix it is with more Regulations.

Or try to find an alternate vendor with better support.
I often wonder (not really) why Jess was hired to monitor this forum.
Direct Customer Service seems lacking (just my observation reading the Forums)

It is often after complaining here that a customer gets the "Apology Tour" and then an offer to help (maybe).
