not exactly DIY- but studying my current system to look at possibility of battery backup.
We have 40 330W panels with enphase IQ7 feeding in 3 strings to a IQ combiner box.
The L1 and L2 to a disconnect switch. From there the L1 and L2 are spliced directly into the mains between the meter and the panel.
most threads I have read describe the L1 and L2 from the disconnect going to a backfed breaker on the panel. Is this setup acceptable?

My setup has L1 L2 from combiner to disconnect to the Enphase smartswitch(AKA gateway) to main panel. This being whole home backup setup. Grid power comes to meter then to Enphase smartswitch. If I'm reading your post correctly, your setup is similar. So it would be OK unless your locality has code against it.
