Hello, I need feedback on my planned electrical upgrade on my sailboat.

I have a 12v 40a Mitsubishi alternator on my boat's diesel engine. My solar runs two lines (port & starboard) at 20v, typically 2-9a each. I will be using 12v lifepo4 battery setup using 4s2p Fortune or Overkill batteries & Overkill BMS.

I will be removing the lead acid batteries in my setup (currently 4x starting batteries, if you think that's bad you should see the wiring). I intend to use a Sterling Power alternator protective device (https://www.sterling-power-usa.com/SterlingPower12voltalternatorprotectiondevice.aspx). I seem to need this regardless of the other hardware I'm selecting.

To get the alternator power I'm considering the Renogy DCC50S (https://www.renogy.com/dcc50s-12v-50a-dc-dc-on-board-battery-charger-with-mppt/).

I've also considered this Victron BMS (https://www.amazon.com/Victron-Battery-Management-System-BMS/dp/B01MYRUUEE). I'm not sure if I completely understand it, I think I'd still need to regulate the power.

Which I think may need to be paired with a Balmar regulator (https://www.defender.com/search.html?q=balmar + Ele015E).

To replace the lead acid starting battery I intend to use a basic lithium jump starting battery. I'm looking at several that would not provide charging voltage or accept a charge. These are intended to be disconnected or switched off after ignition.

It may also be possible to use the lifepo4 bank for starting, instead of a separate single use battery.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and further considerations. I've seen the other recent posts on similar setups, and I've tried to take into account the feedback they've received

Your alternator is a very low amp. You should check in the specs for the dcc50s and verify what it will do if it's connected to a low amp alternator. I know it's job is to protect the alternator but it may have difficulty with a 40 amp one.

You may not need the Sterling alternator protector. That function should be handled by the dcc50s, if it will work with a low amp alternator.

Note that for the dcc50s you cant exceed 25 volts and 600 watts. So be sure your solar panels won't exceed that.

Please let me know what you find out about how the dcc50shanfles low amp alternators.
