I did a thing. I have a four year old truck battery. Bought it without realizing it was a stupid sealed “no maintenance” flooded lead acid battery.

Like I said it’s four years old , I don’t use the truck a lot (once or twice a week) but since we live in Arizona I know that it consumed some electrolyte so I wanted to top it off and give it an equalization charge.

Long story short there was absolutely no way to open it (vent housing plastic welded to battery case at factory). I could see the outline of the gusset ring where the cell caps were plastic welded in place at the factory.
(Carefully) drilled a hole in all six cells, put on the charger and topped off with distilled water. Luckily plates not exposed, glad I did it maybe get an extra year or two out of the battery.

I need to seal up the drill holes (1/4” diameter). I cut out 6 plastic disks a little bigger than 1/4” and was going to use some red RTV sealant to close the holes. I am assuming RTV is compatible with sulfuric acid? I will make sure no sealant clogs the vent baffling / passageways. Any other recommendations for sealant to close holes? Maybe JB weld would be more better seal/ more permanent if it’s compatible with sulfuric acid ?

Most batteries are made of polypropylene. This glue beat JB Weld hands down on polypropylene. They both were equal on PVC but that's not what battery cases are made of. Make a plug out of a piece of PP and glue it into the hole with this stuff.
