Seems squirrels ate all the insulation off the power companies lines leading to my house

I guess I'm going to have to call the power company soon. Wife noticed the insulation missing from the power lines leading to the house. Damn squirrels have removed a ton of the insulation and have chewed into the cables at different points along the run.

It's a battle. I use Havahart traps with peanut butter crackers, once caught they go for a dunk in a trash can full of water, I call it the 10 minute swim test. Once they fail the test, they get a free lift to the local landfill.

Yes definitely call them.

Reminded me of a copper scrapper guy I once knew. He would cannibalize every ground wire. I fussed and fussed but deaf ears.

We have above ground power. The insulation is nearly gone from all of them, be it from squirrels or age/rot over the past 50 years since they were installed. Sometimes a squirrel will jump from one wire to another, and briefly touch both. Extra crispy squirrel.

This the triplex (spiraled conductors with neutral messenger) from the xfrmr to the house?

If it was squirrel they’d prob be touching the neutral as they were eating the insulation and would have been fried instantly.

Good on you for noticing, usually it’s the home owner carrying a ladder putting up holiday lights that gets lit up to realize the insulation is failing.

Along with drip tubing, sprinkler heads and anything else that will sharpen their fangs, they eat bunches of Spectrum/Xfinity cables around here, if they aren't buried. Cable guy says there is something in the PVC cover that attracts them, and they're 'looking into it'.

I've only ever had a problem with red squirrels here. They chew threw metal screens and everything. Never a problem with the grey squirrels. And chipmunks love to get into the gutters and clog them.
