There is a survival series on History Channel called "Alone". The filming is supposedly done by the individuals and no crews are involved, and it certainly seems like this is the case. While the participants do get periodic checks by medical staff they are otherwise on their own. It is probably the most difficult survival scenario since the challenge not only involves finding food and making shelter but also dealing with being alone for a long period of time.
The participants are given some basic help in the form of a tarp, basic archery equipment and about 6 or so arrows, a knife, snare wire, and a sleeping bag.
I find it interesting that the women seem to do better than the men overall, and I think it has a lot to do with making a shelter that is comfortable to live in, and coming up with things to do to keep busy when food is not an issue.
