Customer complained the dang thing kept tripping and wanted me to remove the GFCI…. I declined…

That's really common. I work on pools and those outlets are normally shut off at the breaker due to water egress. I would say 80% of the time they are broken.

You should see how hapazardly some older 120 / 240 volt underwater lighting is installed, thank God for grounding.

It isn’t the grounding that protects people, it’s the ground FAULT disconnects… the poolside is WELL grounded…

Code prohibits any outlets within 6’ of the waters edge…
