To ground or not to ground

do I need to ground the solar charge controller to an earth ground with ground rod or can I even ground it to battery ground?

12 volt system, 710 watt solar in series, Victron 150/85 charge controller

No, you don't need to ground it, cable runs are going to be short. If you have a larger system and higher voltages you might want to consider it.
