Hi all I am new here, my husband and I moved to Puerto Rico and are working on going solar. We are currently on the grid (it’s bad) we have a powerful generator that we plug into a transfer switch (GE 100 Amp 240-Volt Non-Fused Emergency Power Transfer Switch) and it works for the whole house-pictures below. We use around an average of 9000 watts. So my question is when we become solar can we plug the solar system to this transfer switch or will I have to change it. Thank you for your time.

Provided you select a compatible inverter/charger, you could install it at the OUTPUT of the transfer switch. The inverter would pass through generator or grid source if active (depending on the transfer switch) and then take over the moment grid/generator is lost.

Most decent inverter/chargers act as a UPS with a 20ms transfer time.

Additionally, if the generator and inverter have the feature and are compatible, the generator could be made to automatically start if the batteries drop to a particular level.

I have a Generac generator with a transfer switch. With the inverter I am getting, I really don’t need the “transfer” capabilities as that is internal to the inverter (Sol-Ark 15k). But I’ll use it as an automatic disconnect from the grid connecting between meter and inverter(s).
