If ppl ever looked at 100 - 500 year flood plain maps would know living space aka land would go away real quick.
Far as that goes disaster of all kinds can hit any place.

That is exactly why ppl moved to those areas - good farm lands. Easy river boat access for shipping meant those low areas flooded too. The floods use to bring back nutrients and such like natural fertilizers. Most ppl built their homes elevated. Most railroads when they were surveyed were done so for track elevations - try to avoid being flooded out.
PPL decided to live in those areas and a lot of them paid the additional Flood Insurance fees …. And when it comes to paying up the insurance companies want to skate out get tax payer to pick it up. Flood insurance is very expensive.
I think NC might not of been as Bad had they drained the water in lakes down beforehand. They had been sued in the past for causing flooding in that State.

That would be same all over the USA that got “built up areas”. There are some cities with old multi-story floor building where have 2 basements too. They built the areas up from dredging rivers. All up and down the river ways for a lot of areas. They figured out needed drain the swamps and make deeper water docks . Dams were put in with locks too.
