Hi All,

I have a solar panel charging a battery which in turn charges my car battery during the night (car does not get a lot of use, so drains the car battery quickly)

Where would i connect the shunt to measure the car battery? Do i have to connect it directly at the car battery or can I connect it to the car battery charging cables, which are about 7 ft away.

Thanks.

A battery cannot directly charge another battery of similar voltage. A diagram of your setup would be useful.
If you car battery drains quickly , then there is a fault In the vehicle wiring set up, or the car battery is end of life.

Smart Shunt doesn't have much signal strenght...It is good for like 10' So it connects to the negative side of the battery and you need all current the battery uses to go through the shunt, other then that is can be anywhere in the wire that all the power goes through.

Thanks for all the replies, i now have it setup and working.

I use an Orion-Tr smart, which is a Boost converter between the solar battery and the car battery.

I may not use the car for over a week, which drains the battery, "quickly" may have been the wrong wording.

Hi,

My setup is in a garage, 12 volt at the moment and will probably stay at that voltage, so i am looking at increasing the amperage.

I am now thinking of adding another 2 lead acid batteries (possibly more) and an inverter to run 7, 240v led strips, 20 watt each, though these may change to 12v, if that will make any difference.

The main battery is 130 amps. The next is 44 Amps and the third is 40 amps.

Do I wire them together with a wire rating of 130 amps between each battery or just above the amp rating of the solar charger, which is 60 amps.

What would be the fuse rating for each battery.

Is there a recommended fuse type?

My solar panels are 18v and total 300w.

I am also using 3 Victron Energy Smart Battery Sensors.

Thanks.
