Wet Stacking a diesel generator

I just happened to see this video and thought it gave a good explanation of the cause of wet stacking.

Part of what he says is true and part isn't. Idling up does help by getting the fuel out of the cylinder better. So it does help even if the temps are not ideal. At the same time idling up makes heat so its a win win there.
 
Diesel engine rings are shaped slightly different from gasoline to help clear the carbon out of the ring lands.
To do their job properly you need a load on them so they seal and move to clear that carbon.
At idle they do not do this and you coke the rings and glaze cylinders ( some engines deal with this better than others )

Load your engine.

Idling kills.

A diesel cant generate enough heat at idle this makes things worse...
 
Tell that to all the generator service techs that have to deal with wetstacking on oversized standby generators that almost always test run every week unloaded.
Probably have it in idle mode and not run mode. Big difference in idle. NCR had that problem until they figured out they had them set wrong.
 
The vast majority of large standby diesel generators don't idle down, the issue is running them unloaded. Note this is coming from someone that owns a total of 6 diesel generators ranging from 5KW to 125KW, 8 if you count the non running ones, including the one a tree fell on during a hurricane 5 years ago. Though I will say some engine models are more prone to wet stacking than others.
 
My landcruiser has an idel up switch which takes it from 850 RPM to 1200. I thought that this was for battery charging as my model has the winter pack, heated seats & rear cabin heater.
I have a small 1.6 common rail diesel, usually idles at 750rpm.
revs itself and idles 1000rpm after going on a trip on top of a cold mountain.

I drive the F70 with the cold package.
That knob under the dash to the left of the steering column lets you raise the RPM.

To left of the injection pump you will see a vacuum break that also is used to raise the RPM for the air conditioning system.

Ok read that again...
No that engine is different from ours.
We just use the same the old all mechanical injection radial pump.
Your could be drive by wire for all I know.
Ill look under the hood of a new one and see what it looks like
 
Typical loads on diesel standby generators and loads on diesel pickup trucks are two very different things.

it's an inline 4 common rail
bit similar to a vw jetta diesel

Rpm went back to normal after going down the mountain.

probably have to do something with thin air.
i don't see a thing to alter my rpm, i think its all computer.

I have all the symptoms of wet stacking, black goo seeping from the exhaust. I thought it was bad valve guides. But that didn't quite make sense. This is on a backhoe, this all started after injection pump rebuild and new injectors. I'm suspecting bad injector(S)?

Post up an introductory thread at the Heavy Equipment forum and then ask your question there. Centuries of experience there with that stuff.

Follow up thanks for reminding me to load up my light plant. We used it again today, and then I switched on the 6000W of lights and made it grunt a bit. I had never heard it labor like that. Left it run an hour and a half that way, unloaded it cooled it down a bit and shut down.
