Why you cannot charge LiFePO4 below 0 degrees Celsius

Charging below freezing temp is not recommended for LiFePO4 batteries. But here is an interesting discussion on the topic.
So by charging at low rate you are basically just giving to each ion time to meet its electron and avoid litium metal creation

I see this reminder every time on the battery sales website: LiFePO4 batteries cannot be charged below 0 degrees, which will affect the lifespan. Finally know the reason. thank you for your sharing!

Pretty impressed to see the depth of understanding the Battleborn CEO demonstrated of the fundamentals of how to make best use of LFP based batteries. Myths and legends still proliferate in this subject matter, despite all the collective experience we’ve all built up.

One subject not discussed was low current overcharge, or the way the voltage limits applied to charging profiles actually correspond to different SOCs at different charge rates. A 3.60V cutout charging at 1C terminates the charge at a lower SOC than the same voltage threshold applied to a 0.05C charge. Would be a good one for Will to enquire about if there’s ever an opportunity for a follow up interview about more topics.
