will a dead battery in series damage the others?

i have 30 day warranty, In the end i can get it for 5USD so if it breaks i wont have lost much. My normal system has all the protections needed. i will need to get a 30a-40a dc breaker for this to be safe correct?
Eh, safe is relative, but yes. Fuse or breaker the battery side of the controller at 40A, close to the battery terminals. Make sure your wire size can handle the charge current, make sure the wire on the PV (solar panel) side can handle the PV short circuit current, set the controller somewhere isolated from anything that could catch fire, and make sure the battery is in a well-ventilated space. As long as you do these things, youre pretty well isolated from anything too catastrophic.

If you can pick up an inline fuse and holder cheaper or the same price as a breaker, I suggest going with the fuse. Cheap breakers are not reliable protection. Ideally you'll never have to rely on it, but if you do, you want to know it will work.
