Will's new Fall Out shelter is cool, but why stay in Vegas?

Love the fallout bunker and I went through the same thought process....was going to build an indoor firing range myself (underground) until I also discovered the lead issue.

But Will talking about all the "government, may I pretty please, okay no?" permit process is infuriating. So why live in Vegas? I know he hates the cold and wants lots of sun, but there must be other places without all the building codes. I'm sure he's not interested in Alaska (we have no building codes where I'm at) but surely there must be some places in the Southwest without building codes. And maybe water, that would be a bonus.

Hopefully he has a place away from people (a bunker near Vegas isn't going to do well in a real crisis) that he doesn't talk about. And as smart as he is, I would be surprised if he didn't have a real compound somewhere.

At any rate, looking forward to the new studio videos.

Useless in my opinion.

If that day come (nuke)
You have recycling your own p........s to make water .
You have to have 100year of can food .
Toilet is not thare .
You can not get out .
No dokter if you break somting .

Best thing.

Go outside
Thake your girlfriend.
Let it bend over the Table.
Set a beer in your other hand.
Have a good nice feeling and drinking
And go see that nice mushroom cloud .
And its over.

For the rest will nice bunker

Yup.. I'd rather be at ground zero and be vaporized than deal with the long slow death of the aftermath.

There's a Naval Weapons Station about five miles from me. Probably one of the first places to be targeted by a nuke.

There are about 12,000 nuclear weapons in the world, Vegas, with a population of 700,000) is the 24th Largest city in the US. if there is any adversary mad enough to wage a nuclear war with the US it is not inconceivable that the top 50 cities in the US will be hit. In the case of Russia, that would only amount to 1% of their nuclear arsenal. If they wanted to hit all cities with a population of 100,000 or more, that would still be less than 10% of their nuclear arsenal. (Even China has about 400 nukes)

If you are worried about nuclear war, it would be better to move far away from any military bases and cities, with or without a nuclear fallout shelter. And that goes for any nation, even those who don't have nukes themselves.

As for building codes, developers are constantly try to cut corners and building codes will reduce the worst of the worst. But if you were building a home for yourself, why would I have to force you to make sure you build your house in a way where the roof doesn't collapse on you, or that you install sufficient insulation? Just don't create problems for other people, for example dispose of waste products responsibly and not in the gutter or river. Most people who build their own do so because they are capable of doing that, so let them.

Pretty much the motto of my life. Don't go protecting me from me, please and thank you.

Our DIY system has been working flawlessly from day one, for several months now (much help from several good folks on this forum, so thanks again for that). Meanwhile, I have a friend who hired a well known company in our region to install his system because he wanted to net meter, "bank" credits, etc. We started on almost the same day. They just got his system live a few days ago and it's giving him fits. Turns out it wasn't properly programmed by the "experts".

Example:
I have two houses on my property - the modern home built in 1981 and updated in 2000's following modern codes, insulation etc.
and the original farm house from the 1940s' built with no codes.
The farm house was built by two brothers who cut wood for the railway (yes in the 40's they burned wood to run steam engines around here)
They didn't own a level or a square - I can tell, but they built with rough cut 2"x lumber and solid 1" planks (no plywood or OSB) and the house is still here 80 years later. I use it for my office space.

If we get a late winter heavy wet snow, followed with rain - I don't worry about the 1940's house roof system, I clear wet snow off the 'modern' roof.

So I ask you - do we need building codes to "make buidings safe" - or do they get used for revenue generation, and control of the public?
The part that really pisses me off - we see building codes HOA and regulations make construction more difficult, slow, and expensive and then "Wonder why" young people don't own their own homes...
There are consequences to rules...sometimes the result is opposite of the stated intention.

didn't watch but outside Clark County where Las Vegas resides, there is less enforcement and rules up North. No smog laws and housing codes are all relaxed or not enforced.

Government loves "not enforced" laws. They're not enforced until they selectively enforce them. Great way to target select individuals for something that has nothing to do with why they're actually being targeted (expressed views, for example).

He is right on the border with Arizona. He could move a few miles. Or, there are surrounding areas that are off grid rugged little towns in the desert. I think he is having fun building it, not necessarily planning to use it.

Yeah mostly to put money in the pockets of developers & construction companies. I work in construction sometimes & the standards of insulation & general build quality of new stuff is shocking.

When he talks about permits not being approved for random dumb reasons even when his contractors were the ones applying, sure sounds like he has registered on Vegas code enforcement's radar. Time to go!

Any deets about his lemon Corvette? Wtf.?

I built my own 100 yard range 22 years ago, I made a shooting station inside a small insulated building area to make a comfortable area with room to organize stuff, and to contain some of the noise. I shot through a tall narrow window that opens when in use, and lined the interior with insulation but no solid surfaces so it absorbs some of the noise. (I have neighbours with horses and dairy cows, don't like to be too loud, they don't seem to notice the shots)
Inside the shop I set up 30 yards for archery practice during winter - nice to have an area without snow !

For Will, he already built the concrete space, I was trying to suggest something (legal) he could use it for now that he has it anyway...arrows and pellets are quiet, and don't break any laws likely, there are lead-free pellet options.

It's a common fantasy some people have. It's like playing fort with cardboard boxes when you are young.

How did you vent the lead from a shooting range in a structure? That's the part that put the kibosh on my plan (and apparently Will's).

I can shoot outdoors, no biggie, but I don't like the idea of making noise even though it won't bother anybody. Around these parts a gunshot attracts Brown Bears who have associated gunshots with an easy meal they can steal after mauling humans. I don't need that if I can avoid it.

All I really want to train with is my Glock 20 to try to keep the wife and I sharp on the draw for the big bears. Although we'll probably just use Glock 45mm for the training because 10mm ammo is just too damn expensive.

45mm!?! Dang I want one of those! I'm sure it would do the job on bear, moose and lightly armored vehicles!
The lead problem is mostly solved by using copper projectiles, though there is still some lead in the primers & probably propellant as well.

Do you reload?

It is a firing station, semi enclosed, but the majority of the lead issue (if I understand it correctly) is from the projectile shattering upon impact - in my set up that is outdoors, and 100yds away in the backstop - which is made of timbers and sand to catch the rounds.

I assume so...copper jacket at least.

Yup - that is a fun hobby all on it's own too.

That's a good idea, if that solves the lead issue. Makes sense that it would.

I don't really know that is solves or just reduces the issue.
Generally I don't sit in the firing station blasting hundreds of rounds or anything. More likely fire off 4-5 three-round groups to test a new powder or sight-in a scope.
There are other lead sources in my life - I have spent a lot of time riding in aircraft buring 100 Octane fuel (that is leaded) and being around lots of diesel heaters, diesel fumes in general - all fuel has various amounts of nasty stuff in them. I don't think the range is my greatest exposure by any measure.
