Winter storm 1/2025

Hope everyone is ok, but sitting here in NW Ontario with nearly zero snow, was raining a couple weeks ago, seems so upside-down seeing all that winter weather so far south.
We have sunny clear but cold skys for last couple days- (42 kWh today!) & the forecast is warming to above freezing temps next week !!

Travel becomes difficult? Where am I going?

I have a diesel excursion with 4wd and manual locking hubs.
I have a hummer h2 with full time awd
I have a nissan xterra with 4wd shifter on the floor
I have a jaguar e-pace with full time awd
I have a fisker ocean ev with full time awd

When push comes to shove, I will be able to get milk and bread from my local grocery store.
The bravery of you willing to admit you own a fisker ocean, lol!! Best of luck, least you have other options.

Nuts

Couldn't use the Sled last "winter" and not looking great so far this one either !
colder this year, but not much white stuff on the ground, pretty much like your pics - barely covered.

Tuesday grass still green
No frost in ground at all

Fuck with Mother Nature !!!!

Don’t forget, I run an HVAC company… emergency weather drives my business!

Heck, if us getting some would lighten the load on you guys affected by the storm, I would welcome it!
Snow is VERY fleeting in these parts, when it chooses to grace us, it’s usually under an inch.

Certain freaky storms hit some years, and we have seen 2 feet or black ice…
I am well familiar with that area…went to collage in the foothills- piedmont area schools
. you’re right …and when it does hit y’all , it has more effect , as we up here just assume we will have miserable wet and snowy winters…we are ready for it..

The I-85 corridor from Clemson to Charlotte always get suprized when it hits good.

First thing people there do is jump in their car , go ride around , slide , then call wreckers to get em out of the ditch…

The tourist here are worse… I want no dealings with Florida folks learning to drive in snow…on Christmas / New Year vacation..
So I lay low…

We're in the low 20s as well (degrees C of course), and there's the usual amount of white stuff on the ground:

And we do have the one 4WD (golf cart), so I guess we're good.

My Favorite Daughter flew into DC yesterday, I sure don't miss that kind of winter!

I love my ocean, that thing is rock solid. It has treated me very well. It also has a 113kwh battery and V2L capabilities.
Fisker Ocean uses Magna drive train components and electronics so its not like it will be hard to fix..
If I got a good deal I might have a hard look at it too....

Probably easier to get parts for a 66 Studebaker Lark than many newer cars, probably cheaper....

Just because its an orphan does not mean its the end of the worlds...
Some are more desirable....

I think there are a lot of Lark parts in that even this late lol...

My god that was a beautiful car...

They are flogging off the inventory dirt cheap on the remaining Fisker Ocean. Less than half price.

That's a bummer....

When Studebaker failed they Hamilton plant continued for a few more years.
Maybe with some for sight the gov could have seen the advantage of helping Magna take over the failing Fisker and do something smart and Chinese like....

Tesla plug in hybrid...

I was reading about the Chinese hybrids.
They use onboard generators added to Evs rather than make an conventional car electric like we do here.
Cheaper and easier

How much proprietary software is in that Studebaker?

How many modules needed just to turn the car on/unlock the electronic parking brake?

Oh don't get me started on that crap. Like just give me a darn lever or pedal.
Maybe they did the EPB because some older people don't have the arm or leg strength to properly set the parking brake, IDK.
One of the reasons I love my 99 Camaro is because it is stupid. The only "smarts" it has is basic ABS and an airbag.

That's why we need Chinese cars here.
Smarten the big two right the fuck up.....
They would need to build a cheap reliable car to compete.
All those unnecessary modules would have to go....

When GM went bankrupt Magna was sniffing around the body before the gov money brought the zombie back...
Wanted to buy GM Canada.
This would have been a very good idea I think.
GM USA could have used that money, and sell exactly those things to Magna software and modules to raise cash for the next generation cars.
And some more fresh competition in cars is never a bad thing on a level playing field..

Magna already builds cars under contract for more than just Fisker....
It was a good idea I think.

We ended up with 8" of snow yesterday, with a lot sleet last night before it ended around midnight. We never lost power, but there's about 75K in KY that did. We're still under a travel restriction in our county. It's starting to snow some again now.

Some pics from last night during the sleet storm.

That's what the origional fisker karma was, a hybrid that made sense. Purely electrical drive train, gas generator that makes electric.

I never understood how they can really impose travel restrictions within the United States. This isnt Nazi Germany and we are not at War. Its just snow, travel at your own risk. We are protected by the constitution to travel freely. I would be very disorderly if they tried that crap with me.

It is because by you going out in horrible conditions puts others at unnecessary risk.
I am torn, I see both arguments. Maybe it should be, look, we're at level 3, so if you go out, and do something stupid, we ain't putting ourselves at risk because you went stupid.
Of course, that wouldn't fly well either.
No good answer I guess.

It is simple.
If you choose to go out and you get stranded, you will expect emergency services to rescue you.
At least the majority of folks will.
And restrictions are about majority. Not the skilled unimog equipped survivalist.
Emergency services is expensive.
Tow trucks are expensive...

Remember there are people that once stranded will sit in their car, let it run covered in snow and their bodies discovered the next day.

These are the same people that need to be told not to run their generators in their basement.

We got a ton of snow in Ohio earlier this week. Now a front is sweeping the country.

What are you doing just in case travel becomes difficult?
No snow here in NE Iowa, the 3 inches we had early December all melted away during the 3 weeks of never ending clouds and fog. When it does snow, I have to plow snow for over 3 hours. Shop and house, then mini storage I own plus a rental house, then to my parents and plow their drive.

No need to go anywhere except doctor appointment later this week. The state keeps the highways very clear in Iowa, counties only during the day. I just work in the shop and spend any free time on current build. I do need to start getting things ready for income tax after the wife gets done entering everything in from December. I have a new work trailer to build, all cabinets and equipment have to come out of the current work trailer and get installed in the new trailer plus I'm adding a 48V inverter and battery to it.
