Winter storm 1/2025

Snow on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Only 1 or 2 inches but ice under the snow, the island has no snow removal equipment so we will wait for sunny days to melt the snow off the streets and my panels. JJJJ stop by a few weeks ago to talk solar and look at my system. What a difference a few weeks make.

This was Sunday evening.

This was this morning. I normally use 10KWh roundtrip, I was still a few miles from work when I took the photo...

(sorry for the blur, may have been in motion while snapping).
High rolling resistance just kills an electric motor. Electric motor is so much more efficient, the 20-50% loss kills you. With a 30% efficiency to start with on an ICE the same loss is 5-10%.

It's all relative to what you are used to.
Many years ago I traveled to Texas in February.
It was 5°f when I left here, and 45°f when I arrived in Texas.
I was wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals. The locals were dressed like Eskimo's.
lol same deal for me when i visit friends and family in southern FLA....
i'd be in my t-shirt and shorts, and local wearing coats , hoodies and acting like they are freezing :-)

I was so happy about the clear sky's that I cleared the roof arrays in sub 0F wind chill after work today; tomorrow it will be worth it.
It was worth it (Inverter 1 MPPT1 is the roofs).

MPPT 1 inverter 2 is 5180W of panels.

I did a crappy job of clearing the roofs and the shallow angle is hindering melting when it's around 20F...

Had a similar experience hiking in New Mexico with my brother. A complete stranger asked if my brother was ok, then if he had any other clothes. Took us a while to figure out what they were talking about.

Once we did figure out what they were talking about, we just told them we lived WAY north of there, then it all made sense to everyone. It was about 60 degrees F in the early morning. So we had t-shirts on obviously. They were bundled up.

Wow what a change. And if memory serves me correctly you had temperatures in the 50s last week.

Yes, last week in the mid 50s and last night sleet and snow with a low of 29 at my house

Or just Hotspot your phone.
I've been debating that myself for the cottage.

I could buy a cell booster and yagi directional antenna and hot spot my PC and automation from a phone.

But I am wondering if I would be more amp miserly by using as Huaway dongle the Yagi and then run a small lower power brick PC.
Then run everything off the WiFi in the PC directly

But if the Starlink thing comes down to a competitive price I could skip the LTE
But would that use more power?

Starlink would be a much better experience, but it does draw a lot of power when it is melting the snow off the dish with its built in heaters.

All great ideas. However some of my wife’s favorite businesses are down with the outage.

This is where this belongs lol

Boy it’s nice outside
-3
We got an 8 snowfall last day
But it’s real nice powder
Too bad I don’t ski or sled.

I had a break down after the third driveway
All this sitting around and I have accumulated a little moisture in last falls gasoline
So I pulled the carb apart, pulled the ignition apart bought a plug and did a tune up

But like I said that sun was nice
I was working in a t shirt!
If you had solar panels working it sure would have been a good day
