X9 Solar Flare 10/3/2024 + 10/10/2024 G4 Storm

First models on the space weather forums are estimating a possible arrival after midnight UTC on the 6th, so that would be evening of the 5th for us in the US.

Very nice, when I saw your pics I grabbed my phone and headed outside to see if I get any shots. Some came out okay, I'll post them later.

Can you actually see these colors, or are these the results of holding the camera shutter open a while? All I can tell is a faint reddish tint to the skies.

I’ll have to check the logs of the neutral ground current monitors on the auto transformers tomorrow, they spike around 30-60A on a good event.

Least in the Northeast a sensitive nuke plant is in the middle of a refueling outage so they won’t be yanked around.

Different flare after the x9 launched tonight's storm, but happy for it to be a combo thread. Title edited.

I can pick up the pink on my phone now in norcal. Headed to a higher vantage point with faint hopes of naked eye viewing.

About 11:25 PDT, San Francisco Bay area near east end of Dumbarton Bridge: Nothing distinguishable from urban near-horizon sky glow.
(Clear sky dim enough that some stars visible in urban area.)

Wish we were out at the NV place tonight. About the same latitude but at 5010 feet and DARK: valley surrounded by foothills and very few lights, mostly 2 1/2 to 13 miles away. Milky way from there is a big splash of stars and other astronomical light across the sky rather than a few visible dots in the same general area.

With the naked eye I could see the reds and very faint greens. The phone camera on night mode absolutely increased the color value significantly.
First time in my life I could positively see them with the naked eye in central PA.

CMEs are not relevant to small scale solar. Probably not even utility scale.
CME's have affected the grid. Northern or Southern systems mostly affected. Quebec had a blackout in 1989 CME related. It is true that the 'grid' and long transmission lines have improved greatly.

Here's a few, they're not as good as they should be, but there definitely is something there.

Northeastern Alberta here. These were as beautiful as the event in May.
