The bad one is leaking. There's a photo of it in the original post. I did pull back the blue lining since then and I can see a crack in the aluminum and I can definitely smell the fumes. I can get a photo of the leak in a bit.

Here's the bad cell. You can see where the aluminum is compromised.

Unfortunately all of those are too tall for the space. I've only got about 175mm in height to deal with, which is why I'm really limited in which individual cells I can put in there. I heard back from IMR batteries this morning and they have some in stock that I can get in a few days. The only...

Thanks for the input. They do still work and I wouldn't have noticed anything if I hadn't taken them out and looked at them. I don't know how they could have gotten wet, given their location, but I guess anything is possible. They definitely could have gotten hot, but shouldn't have been...

Thanks for the response. I figured that the load wouldn't be even but wasn't sure to what degree. Also, I wasn't sure if that even matters all that much. As in, if the smaller/closer battery feels the load more and drains all the way to cutoff, then the load would automatically start getting...
  • Post in thread: Current source for 120ah cells?

Yeah I saw those but unfortunately they're too tall for my application. My cells are about 3 years old that I got off of Aliexpress. They are 170mm tall, which is about as tall as I can use in this location (the aux battery spot on a VW Vanagon). Anything much taller than that won't fit :/

I believe the specific measurements of the compartment are: 11.75 x 6.75 x 6.75. I started to wonder about side mounting as well but the bottom footprint of the compartment isn't any bigger. There is more clearance as it goes up from the floor, but the bottom is still only 6.75in. It's a 1987...

Got it - thanks for the info. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. One more, probably dumb question. In something like a vehicle, when running batteries in parallel, is it necessary for the negative terminals of both batteries to be directly connected to each other or can they both...

The tape wasn't to clamp them together, it was to put more protection around the bottom edges. I was on the road, in another country, and just trying to make something work. Also, there is no room in this location for clamps, bolts, etc., so it requires being a little "ghetto". Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the explanations, that really helps and all makes sense. I may just need to get a heating pad for the smaller battery, since it’s closer to the exterior wall of the van. To answer the question about dimensions, I don’t have the exact measurement handy but it’s about 6.75 x 6.75 x...
  • Post in thread: Visual Inspection - Are these cells bad?

One question: Does anyone know a reputable shop where I can buy individual 120AH cells? Particularly ones that don't have 2-3 month shipping times? Regardless of the condition of the remaining cells, I know I have one that's bad and I'm scared to put it back in. I'm not sure what all the...
  • Post in thread: Visual Inspection - Are these cells bad?

Hey everyone, I removed the battery cells from my camper yesterday as I was rearranging things and noticed one was bulging and appeared to be leaking on the bottom. The others don't appear to be actively leaking but I can see some ripples and peeling around the bottom that I'm concerned about...
  • Post in thread: Visual Inspection - Are these cells bad?

Nope, it was just sitting on a polyester mat. There *shouldn't* have been any contact with anything but that. I'm also confused as to what could have gotten it wet, since it's not generally a place where water would get. But, then again, it's in a battery compartment with no drain so if anything...
  • Post in thread: Current source for 120ah cells?

Hey all, I asked this question in a another thread but I think it got buried. Does anyone know a good supplier for 120ah lifepo4 cells? Preferably US stocked, or fast shipping to the US. I have a cell that went bad and am looking for a replacement cell, or a whole set of 4 if needed. I emailed...

So, if I understand correctly, I'd need two bus bars, one for positive and one for negative. Same cable lengths for positive and negative from each battery to both bus bars. Then positive and negative from bus bar to fuse block and ground can be any length. Correct? I guess I was just thinking...
  • Post in thread: Connecting Lifepo4 batteries in parallel

Hey all, first time poster. I'm a bit of a n00b so apologies in advance. TLDR: I currently have a 3ish year old 120ah lifepo4 battery. I want to drop in another battery in in parallel to increase the capacity. My questions are: 1. Is it OK to mix different ages and capacities? 2. Is it a...
  • Post in thread: Connecting Lifepo4 batteries in parallel

Actually I have one more question, just related to having batteries of different capacities in general. I know having the batteries balanced is important, so is there going to be any problem with the balance if one battery goes offline and then comes back on later? Or will it just balance out...
  • Post in thread: Connecting Lifepo4 batteries in parallel

Thanks for all of the replies. Now that I think about it I could probably just do some sort of switch to switch between the batteries. That way I get the full capacity of both, just at different times. Obviously that means I can only charge one at a time as well but that's a small price to pay...
