I too wish I had know the incompatibility with my previous EG4LL's before I got from them, it is quite annoying!
Reading this thread motivated me to double check my setup, since it's mainly just for backup, and I just found another significant issue;
I have a 24v EG4LL from Aug21 in series...
I was just reading the Victron Lynx manuals, and apparently they include a precharge circuit in their Lynx SmartBMS.
So, they know it is an important feature, you just have to have the full Victron stack to get it.
I just fired up my Multi II 48V 3000VA 120V last night. I plugged mine into the AC in first which charges up the capacitors first, then I powered on the DC side which works well.

I realize it's above the budget of the OP, but if you can stretch it; it's supposedly the same OEM as the Samlex one above, but just a little cheaper.

In the troubleshooting section on pg. 9 under the symptom "Completely dead, no display" it states, "Battery voltage must be at least 10V for the unit to operate."
