Sorry for my delay...life remains busy and I have been waiting for a response from Big Battery about whether I can replace the 300 amp fuse. I should be able to, but I wanted a response from them. Wrote an email first thing Monday morning, but no response as of yet (Tuesday night). I am...
  • Post in thread: Parallel vs Series Panel configuration - how are calculations correct in video?

Holy hell, I had that in my notes too. I mixed up watts and amps (insert slapping my forehead here), I should just go to bed. Mods, please feel free to delete this thread.
  • Post in thread: Why use fuses instead of breakers?

Hello, everyone. I do appreciate all the input, but several posts went way over my head. I have gone through the resources section, watched all of Will's beginner-friendly stuff and read two simple books on setting up solar power systems. I cannot comprehend what a lot of people write in the...

    Good to know, thank you!
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

I need neat and tidy...I am terrible at physically organizing things, like wires!
  • Post in thread: Parallel vs Series Panel configuration - how are calculations correct in video?

Hello, everyone. My understanding of wiring panels in series was that the voltages are additive while the watts stay the same, while if they are wired in parallel, voltage stays the same and wattage is additive. In Will's video linked below, at the 3:45 mark, he adds both volts and watts for 3...

Swap the wires? I don't understand. Looking at a wire gauge chart linked earlier in this thread, 1 AWG should be good for up to 150A, so the 125A fuse on the battery will trip and protect the wires if necessary, no? And, from what I can tell on that chart, 0 awg should be good for somewhere...

Hey, Stepandwolf. Expected current draw on my battery is a good way to approach this...I did not think of that. I would imagine the highest draw on the battery would be from an 1800W microwave on the inverter (so, at 24 volts, 75 amps?) and a few more amps from miscellaneous items like a small...

Hmmm, that link did not work, but the ANL fuses I found are too large for the holder mine came with, but I do see I can buy a separate fuse holder. I am still very confused....I guess my question is, if I am using the MRBF surface mount block with fuses for each component as pictured (fuse...
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Weird, that link did not work for me either. But that's ok, I appreciate the enlightenment (serious newb here!!) For the MRBF, it is this one where I can screw appropriately-rated terminal fuses to the block: https://www.bluesea.com/products/5196/MRBF_Surface_Mount_Fuse_Block_-_Common_Source
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Hello, everyone. It appears I am much more of a newb than others here, hence my post in the newcomer section, and my forum handle. On other forums (RC planes, RC cars, and others), I started as a complete newb, some members patiently answered my questions, and I was able to “give back” to other...

Going by the chart you provided, I need to "upgrade" the wire gauge for my setup. A bit more expensive, but will ensure minimal losses, so I will do that. I am assuming that since there were no other comments, everything else looks "OK", aside from the wire gauges I have illustrated.

Everyone, many thanks for all the input...I have learned a lot. Now I am awaiting a few items before I begin wiring it up. I will share a pic when it is done :)
  • Post in thread: Why use fuses instead of breakers?

Hello, everyone. I have seen a lot of people use fuses between the battery and another item (ie, inverter) to protect the inverter, or another appliance. My question is this: Why use a fuse which would need to be replaced if it does its job, when you can use a breaker and simply reset it?
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

The Victron 24V to 12V converter has 3 terminals: an 18-35V positive input (red), a 0V input (black) and a 10-15V output (red). The instructions are vague, so I called the vendor, Interters are Us, to explain what to do about the single "negative" input. I was told there is no need for the...
  • Post in thread: Why use fuses instead of breakers?

Many thanks for all the replies! Consensus seems to be that a quality fuse is the way to go for safety, and that is my primary concern.
  • Post in thread: Why use fuses instead of breakers?

Will do. I don't know what the VNEC code is, but I did find the NEC code. Is there a difference? Same with ABYC which I will look at, is ABYCC different?
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Hi, Joey. Thank you for your answers to some of my questions and for the suggestion on fuse block/fuses and 24V to 12V converter - I will search for one. I also will work on a revised drawing over the next few days and share again. I agree about the built-in fuse on the battery - it...
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Thank you, Joey. After viewing a different wire gauge chart from StepandWolf, I see where the 6 and 8 awg wire is too small, so I will upgrade accordingly. Regarding the fuse upstream of the 24>12v, I could not find any info on current draw of this converter via online manual, so I just went...

Smoothjoey, I have no idea what "contactor-based"means, so I guess I will have to find out. My BMS says "BatteryEVO." Anyway, I am growing more frustrated because I don't understand why the fuse on my battery is on the lead that leaves the BMS and goes to the negative side of the Anderson...
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

StepandWolf, Thank you for your suggestions. I figured I may need about 40A DC such as yourself, but wanted a little headroom just in case, so I went 70A for my converter. 1. I don't have a master battery disconnect. The BigBattery does have a built-in power button on the external case which...
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Well, I was assuming the BMS on the battery (provided by BigBattery), which is supposed to disconnect at 20V, would suffice.
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

Damn, I keep forgetting that at twice the volts, amps get cut in half, thank you for the reminder.
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

If the BMS is a reserve parachute, what is the preferred low voltage disconnect method?
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

I wish I could visualize how you used the breakers and box, and your AC panel and AC/DC battery charger. Unfortunately, none of that makes sense to me as I got into this with very minimum knowledge of circuits.
  • Post in thread: Please advise a true NEWB on 24V system

BigBattery never responded to my emailed question about the 300 amp fuse, so I don't know why they used that size, or what I would need to do to replace it. It is bolt-in, so I suppose I could simply swap it out. Ok, finally got version 2 of my wiring plan done. Will it be the final? We'll...
