  • Post in thread: Leaking Electrolyte from Bigbattery Powerblock

There's something else going on here. 11 cells out of 100,000 is 1 in 10,000. So we're supposed to believe that Will was that one guy in 10,000 to be unlucky? I'm sure Big Battery is desperate to put this problem behind them, but I predict something else is going to surface to explain why this...
  • Post in thread: Must battery cables be equal length?

Round trip cable length is not the only factor. The more amps on a cable the greater the resistance in that cable. So shared battery interconnects have higher resistance. Batteries in the middle of a string charge/discharge more than batteries at end of the string. Here's a piece where they...

The biggest I've seen is eight Lithionics 315amp 12v drop-ins in a sailing catamaran.

I think you'll be better off if you use "marine" equipment where ever possible. I don't think it will cost you more and will be much more reliable in the salt air of a boat. I'd suggest the following: Use a Balmar 614 alternator regulator with a temperature sensor on the alternator...
  • Post in thread: New KiloVault battery

Kilovault has just released a new HLX+ series that has a heater but is priced at the old "non-heater" price. They also claim a soon to be released "HLX Bridge" that will somehow coordinate the heaters and charging/discharge of multiple batteries in parallel. Will really liked the KiloVault CHLX...
  • Post in thread: Partial & Unpredictable shading best practices

Yes. Partial shade on a sailboat is a challenge. Are there any flexible panels known to follow shade mitigation practices. Sunpower? Other brands?
  • Post in thread: Leaking Electrolyte from Bigbattery Powerblock

The defect rate doesn't really matter. It's the number of injuries that sets off recalls. That Halo Burger flashlight recall I attached happened because just two young children received "minor skin irritation" from the leaking toy flashlight battery. And those were simple alkaline batteries not...
  • Post in thread: Must battery cables be equal length?

I was actually suggesting this. Four of the batteries are wired as pairs with the positive cable and negative cables starting at different batteries in the pair as is normally done when wiring batteries in parallel. While some batteries will have a longer red cable and some batteries have a...

I bet they are now trying to decide if they have to do a recall. The expense of which could put them out of business. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2002/cpsc-halo-burger-announce-recall-of-flashlights-and-batteries-sold-in-kids-meals
  • Post in thread: KiloVault Battery, is it good?

I was impressed by Will's review on the KiloVault 1800 watt battery. I only recently became aware of Kilovault and am impressed since you appear to have a major established company like Alt-E backing you up. I'm interested in putting a 4 battery bank of your 3000 watt Kilovault into my sailboat...
  • Post in thread: Must battery cables be equal length?

You're, of course, right. "Resistance" was the wrong word
  • Post in thread: Must battery cables be equal length?

What about the option of two strings of two batteries with each pair wired "diagonal"? Then equal length cables from each pair to a cable post or busbar to bring the two pairs together. Then wire the 5th battery as a single and make the cable lengths the same length as the any one battery in a pair.

Rod Collins (posts as MaineSail) is a professional marine electrician - one of the best in the country. Here’s his guide https://marinehowto.com/lifepo4-batteries-on-boats/
  • Post in thread: KiloVault Battery, is it good?

Thanks. It's great to hear that vote of confidence. The one area that both Relion and Kilovault now trail some of the competition is the warranty. Both only offer a 3 year replacement/repair warranty ( the pro-rata period isn't worth much). A few years ago 3 years was great but with more and...
  • Post in thread: Anyone seen inside a LifeBlue?

I'm considering LifeBlue and would love to know how well they are built. Have you or anyone else ever done a teardown? As far as I can tell, LifeBlue is the only US available drop in where the company makes the cells as well as the battery (LifeBlue is owned by Topband in China who is a medium...
