  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

Since posting this comment, I have found a newer, version of this victron orian-tr smart B2B, on Amazon in either the 18 or 30 amp model. Victron Energy Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-Volt 18 amp 220-Watt DC-DC Charger, Isolated (Bluetooth)...
  • Post in thread: Battery rating math.

I think I understand a battery’s amp hour rating and how that relates to it maximum charge rating. I have a pair of deep cycle golf cart batteries, wired in series, in my travel trailer. The rating on the sticker says “120 minutes @ 75amps”. How do I convert that to amp hour rating? Is it as...

In this scenario, if the alternator is putting out 13.2V would a PWM charge controller work? They are smaller and half the price of the Renology 20amp B2B charger.
  • Post in thread: Battery rating math.

looks like I fat fingered while typing. the "PS" should have been "amps". I have edited the original post.
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

The Renology unit I ordered arrived. It does NOT have the smart sensing function to know when the engine is running and then turn the unit on or off. It will require a separate wire and or switch. I’m considering returning this unit and looking at other B2B. I looked at the Victron unit like u...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

I actually have one that I recently purchased too but I am considering returning it because I don’t want to run the ignition wire from the truck (tow vehicle), add a plug, and another 34ft of wire to the rear of the trailer. To turn on the charger.
  • Post in thread: What do we need to charge our battery bank with a gas generator?

I see this thread is a few months old but, it seems I can only find ac to dc chargers up to about to 50 amps DC, that can still plug in to a standard 110v outlet. Above that rating, they need 20+ amps of AC and thus heavier wiring, breakers and plugs
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

After looking around at different DC-DC chargers, I wish they would publish what the amp draw is on the starter battery & alternator. If the B2B is rated at 30amps, I assume that is the maximum charge rate it will put into the batteries it is charging. Is it safe to say that this same unit will...
  • Post in thread: What do we need to charge our battery bank with a gas generator?

That is what I'm hoping for. My new batteries are rated at 75amp for 120minutes. I'm not sure how to do the math to convert that to amp hours. I was told they are 220amp hour batteries. 50% of that quote should give me 110amp hrs useable. Currently, since I only have 2 100watt panels, and I...
  • Post in thread: Battery rating math.

That is a long way to get there but it does make some sense and is what I asked for when I bought these. I asked for something in the 220amp hr range. Thanks!
  • Post in thread: Dc to Dc load on truck.

I know there are different amp ratings for the DC to DC chargers. I believe those ratings are what power the unit can/will put into your battery pack. I am surprised that their adds usually do not list what amp draw this will put on the alternator that is powering it. This is a very important...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

That is what I decided to do. I ordered the Renology B2B charger. I plan to put another lug at the starter, over the current battery cable, run a 6 gauge wire down the frame of the TV and put a 50amp DC plug at the bumper. I will put another mating plug at the trailer tongue and run a 6 gauge...
  • Post in thread: Should I connect -ve battery to vehicle chassis?

Its too bad you haven't gotten any responses. I have the same question. I am setting up the same system you are, if "CC" means converter charger. I tried drawing it out, to work it out in my mind. What looks doable to me is, I'm putting these 3 chargers close together and close to the...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

Well that does sound like a smart DC-DC. I thought "smart" was regarding switching between charging stages. When my B2B arrives, I will have to study the manual to see if it has this same feature. My old 1997 Dodge doesn't have an ignition wire already ran to the back, but I do believe the...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

I don’t know how important this really is. But I liked the sound of this “Intellegent charger” automatically switching between different stages of charging. Almost all chargers decrease their amperage output as the batteries get closer to full charge. The floater/maintenance mode is a must have...
  • Post in thread: What do we need to charge our battery bank with a gas generator?

In the scenario spelled out by the original author here, The sun is shining, your solar array is charging, then you turn on the generator to run the roof mounted air conditioner. The generator will send 110v AC to the new 55amp battery charger, that is connected to the same batteries the solar...
  • Post in thread: Dc to Dc load on truck.

I’m looking at the Victron 18 amp unit. It is rated at 220 watts. the Victron website says it has an 87% efficiency rating. Once I divide 220 (output watts) by 87%, I got 253, divide that by 12 (volts) gives me 21 amps input load. Does that sound right? So I could use a 30amp breaker at the...
  • Post in thread: DC-DC converter sizing

If all u can find are 15amp units and u need more, a lot of these will work together with a second or third charger. The chargers don’t cancel each other out but rather work together. Two 15 amp units will give u the potential for 30 amps of charging capacity.
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

When driving between camping spots I already have an alternator turning and charging the engine battery. I know not to connect my alternator to the coach deep cycle batteries since this would probably overcharge the engine battery. Thinking about a DC to DC battery charger, I had the thought...
  • Post in thread: What do we need to charge our battery bank with a gas generator?

That makes sense. In my case I do not have an inverter. We live in Western Washington (the wet side of Washington) I don't know how effective my solar will be. I will be happy if it just recharges my batteries. I have recently learned, it is my fault that my RV batteries haven't been lasting...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

If the alternator is throwing a bunch of amps to a low battery, while the engine battery is full I expect it could/would overheat or overcharge the full battery.
  • Post in thread: Small array in a sometimes shaded spot

How did u end up wiring them? My guess, 2 parallel sets of 2 in series would work best. when a panel is shaded and the output voltage drops, having 2 in series will keep the voltage output above the 14v needed to charge your battery. Depending on the current MPPT amp rating, this could have all...
  • Post in thread: Can I connect my alternator to my MPPT?

I missed that part of the wiring diagram the first time I looked at it.
  • Post in thread: Where to locate DC-DC charger for Truck / Trailer

Even though the input leads will have a higher amp draw, than the output side, I would put it closer to the battery pack. You will have voltage drop from the alternator to the B2B. That is exactly what the B2B is designed for. It takes the sloppy 12ish volt input and steps it up to the 14.2...
