Background
I know a little about electricity, more than a lot of men. I build lampstands, can use a tester, also know my limits. I don't have much knowledge on electronics. .. When my gel battery was 13 months old, it was not charging and it had to be replaced. We have lots of load shedding, I drop the switches at the DB, leaving only the lights on. I turn on 2 lights only, to show me that the power is restored. I use a surge protector to protect the Mecer Inverter, it does have its own built in, plus I have a surge protector at the DB next to the incoming power. It was recommended that I replace the gel battery with a deep cycle battery, costing R3500. Now, when the electricity is off for longer periods, the Mecer Inverter screen shows it is still 80+ full. I only use it to keep my alarm system on at all times. I could run my TV on it, but I don't like TV. When the power goes off and I am home, I drop all switches at the DB untill power is restored. When the power was off for about 30 hours, I saw that the battery still had 80%+ power. When the battery was fully charged, the alarm on the inverter sounded. I ran to the DB, dropped the circuit breaker for the Inverter, the alarm was still sounding. I turned the Inverter off. I waited about 2min, turned the Inverter on, then went to the DB and turned the circuit breaker on. All was good. .. I did a test overnight, dropped the circuit breaker for the Inverter, when it came down this morning to 80%+ charge remaining, I turned the circuit breaker on and then the Inverter. Alarm sounded again like before. I could not see anything wrong on the screen, except the Hz was on 1 flashed 1twice then onto 50Hz, which is normal. Incoming Voltage range between 228 to 239, which is within the 10% variance. I also tested the incoming current with my tester and home made lamp, both agree. Outgoing power on Inverter read 220V, same on my lamp when I plugged it into the inverter. Kindly advise what the problem(s) might be. Your input / advice would be highly appreciated. I need to be sure I am not being conned. I thank you in advance.... PS: I am 72 years old
Current or Future Solar Power System
I am considering having Solar Panels installed. When the power is off for a couple of days, I need to keep the lights on and prevent food being spoilt due to freezer defrosting. We do have lots of sunshine.
