Overkill 120A 12V 4S BMS overheating during stress testing

Thank you very much, Mike. It's nice to have an explaination and a work-around (be nice if it came from the vendor and was in the manual) and yes, it's quite worrying that it allowed things to get almost 25 degrees C above the threshold w/o tripping the safety features. I did note also that the...

Overkill 120A 12V 4S BMS overheating during stress testing

I think all of the temperature settings are a BMS specific (or battery overall specific, depending which temp sensor is being read) setting. In other words, it isn't a cell-level setting. In this case the discharge over-temperature of the BMS temperatures sensor (not the battery temp sensor) is...

Overkill 120A 12V 4S BMS overheating during stress testing

Any thoughts on why? So far, I've seen nothing in the Overkill manual that says this. Seems quite dangerous to allow a setting to effectively disable a safety parameter without notice and/or good reason.

Overkill 120A 12V 4S BMS overheating during stress testing

I've contacted Steve from Overkill several times on this and haven't heard back. Perhaps others here can shed some light on what's going on. The discussion thus far: "Hi Steve - I have two of the JBD Overkill BMS's for two separate 4S 280AH battery packs. One I've used throughout the year in a...

Does PayPal refund if the inverter delivered does not work/broken?

I just received a refund using PayPal for a purchase of "goods or services" on Facebook Marketplace after the item arrived not working. It was also misrepresented as being "new" when it was not. I paid as a business and specifically for "goods", which I made sure were specified exactly what I...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

No problem - we all learn from the experiences, good and bad, that we post here. If (a very big IF) I ever decide to do this again, I'll seperate the battery into individual cells (as was done when I did the original terminals that turned out OK) and use a drill press with a solid depth-stop on...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

Thanks for bringing this up. It was promptly cleaned, with the inverter and other electrical components exposed blown out with high pressure air. It does look to be a good idea to go back and use elctrical contact cleaner on the components as well.

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

For sure. The less robust terminals on the earlier, less expensive cells were problematic enough. Quite thankful to be getting away with as little damage and down-time as I have. It could have been a more immediate 'volcano' of gassified electrolyte which likely would have hit me in the face as...

Do I Need Breakers for Each Battery

This thread has become a treatise on projection, not battery protection. Most members here don't do this - thankfully.

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

Indeed. Even with a drill press and/or physical stop I'll not be drilling cells again. Getting the right depth to drill was already basically a hazardous guess, and with the inconsistency of these lower priced cells even having accurate information for doing so may be wrong given the poorer...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

UPDATE: The trailer has been completely washed and the smell is almost unnoticeable. The paint on the ceiling area was not damaged in any way, just discolored with small bits of debris that washed off almost completely. There was no sign of heat damage anywhere aside from the battery cells and...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

No indication that the terminal spun. There are no visible traces of liquid electrolite - it appears to have all out-gassed and turned to white smoke during the eruption. Remarkable: the inside of the trailer is a lot less affected by the smoke and smell than I'd feared. I'm still removing items...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

Yes - I should have used a solid depth-stop - however: I used the same depth gauge (tape with a small part left hanging to brush the metal particles aside as it neared the desired depth) ) as I used on the other cells, and although it grabbed a bit at the last, it never seemed to go farther...

    Helicoils in Cell Terminals

An update on my helicoil adventures: I got in on a Michael B. Caro battery group buy a while back, and the 4 - 280AH cells arrived dented, etc. To his credit, at that time Michael was prompt in contacting the supplier and ultimately giving me a full refund. At that time the cells were tapped for...
