I keep hearing that secretary of energy for the Biden Administration say that solar panels are 30% cheaper today but I can’t find anyone selling panels at a 30% price reduction. If anything I‘m finding new solar panel prices are a lot higher today due to inflation. So far, it looks like typical political BS but I hope she’s right. Anyone have links to vendors selling solar panels 30% cheaper today?

I don’t know what she is talking about, but maybe she is referring to the 30% tax credit. It was 26% set to reduce to 22% next year and expire after that. Now it is 30% until 2032. (Or 2033?)

Edit: Just did a quick search, is this what you are talking about?

Biden Energy Secretary Granholm mocked for touting 30% tax credit on solar panels for middle-class Americans

She's a frickin' liar that's why. Gleeful that energy costs are soaring, telling people to go by a $60k EV when we can't afford half that :cautious:

It is that 30% tax credit, which by the way if I'm not mistaken is not 100% refundable so most people won't see that 30% back on their tax return in 23, though I think what's left can roll to 24 (maybe further if needed?).

At best, her answer is misleading.

Is it possible they meant prices have come down 30% compared to a certain time years ago? If so, they should have offered more details to clarify.

My guess it is has something to do with the 30% tax break, just communicated poorly.

How does that work if you DIY installation? Thinking about my mom in Atlanta, her sloped roof faces south, and I've wondered how "worth it" PV panels there (electricity of course much cheaper than here in Slovakia) would be given the need to run AC all summer.

Same for DIY.

And many mini splits would count as energy efficient appliances. Rebates and tax credit.

I regret for my mom that her AC died in 2020! The HVAC guy mentioned the mini-splits, but as she already has ductwork, it didn't seem economical at that point, I guess labor being a big factor.

Doesn’t have to be a mini split. Companies like Mr. Cool also make heat pumps for central air. And since it doesn’t get that cold there, it should work well.

I remember heat pumps coming up in the discussion, and I can't recall why she didn't opt for that. I suppose now even in the US natural gas prices must be increasing, now that there are a lot of LNG exports to Europe. Oh well, she isn't going to change it now, after just two years.

I just installed a mini split in my home. I also had ductwork but the mini split allows me to heat and cool one or two rooms instead the whole house. Long term that savings will pay back in terms of lower operating cost. Several times a year we have serious smoke from local fires and I did upgrade the filter in that old system and during those times I run the fan on slow speed as a whole house air air quality improvement..

I looked into it. It is a non refundable credit, but supposedly can be carried forward if you can't use it all in the first year.
BTW: I find Fox news coverage just as misleading.

Panels are about 150% what they were 3 years ago, the best that I can tell/recall.

Folks stay informed of the news. You would know that's not true, but technically is if you qualify for the tax credit but that requires a new system.

These self-promoting officials are scum. They are referring to the "Inflation Reduction" act of 2022, but in truth, the tax credit simply went from 26% to 30%. Bottom line: They are liars, desperately trying to spin a story to make themselves seem effective.

Any solar purchase qualifies. It doesn't have to be a new system. Even someone without any panels, who simply wants a grid battery backup, qualifies for the credit. A warning: you need a tax liability to offset the credit.

My parents taught me to keep my mouth shut if I didn't have anything good to say about someone.
So this is me, keeping my mouth shut about Jennifer Granholm, current energy secretary and former governor of Michigan.

That's this year. Next year they go from 22% to 30%. The year after that they go from 0% to 30%. Seems pretty effective to me, as it means a larger tax credit for my planned upgrades. I got the 30% tax credit on my DIY system in 2010. Panel prices have dropped nearly 75% from what I paid then.
