Beginner going off grid

I currently work in low voltage electrical as my job so I understand a few things but would appreciate advice. I'm moving out to the country, just bought a 30ft trailer (not going to be moving it at all, it is staying put) there is no electrical grid hook ups there. I would like to power off of solar and wind ( I don't know if they can be combined on the same system) I work most of the day so I won't be home to use power until the evening, but mostly I'll run a tv, cellphone chargers, and a refrigerator. I feel confident enough in my abilities to do a diy build, but I don't know if that's better or more cost effective than a all in one system. Any pointers or tips would be helpful thanks!
 
Cool! On the menu bar, the last item is "DIY Solar Blueprints", which takes you to a number of solar builds. That will give you an idea of needed components. You're ahead by already being familiar with electrical. There is also a "Tools" selection on this forum

Do you have shade, snow, acreage or other environmental aspects that would help to inform the advice that others may offer?

Thanks for the tip. I live in Oklahoma so a fair amount of wind year round. Not much snow usually, not many trees around my property. durring summer the sun rises around 7am ish and sets around 9pm or so. Im not sure what else to add. I am looking for something so I can get started with basic living but i can upgrade as time goes on.
 
Hi guys. I'm new to the forum. Been watching Will prowse on YouTube. About two month ago I got the Mpp solar lv2424 unit with a 3.7kw byd battery pack. Last night my low battery fault code 04 came up. This morning now the mpp is not turning on.....any ideas?

You may want to start out with a wind turbine, simply because it may offer greater capacity factor. You would have to do some analysis to test that hypotheses. Then the cost of the physical assets require to generate kWhrs has to be considered. The advantages of higher capacity factor is less battery capacity required. Capacity factor is the number of hours that a system generates power during a 24 hour day.
 
Solar should be fine if that's all you're looking to power. I'm thinking with his power requirements and location he'd be fine with around 400w of solar panels (maybe even less) and 280ah LifePo4 12V plus MPPT, inverter ETC so you're looking at $1.5-2k on the low end for solar (with DIY LiFEPO4 batteries). @Ampster how much do wind turbines run?

I don't know much about wind turbines except the cost to generate a gWhr of energy falls off quickly the bigger they are. I also know that under the right conditions they are more cost effective than solar panels.
The OP would have to do the research for his exact location.
A quick search on Google found this:
With an average wind speed of 13 mph it will generate 30 kWhs. FWIW, that is a lot of wind.

So probably a dumb question, but can the the solar charger controller handle wind? I assume so, as long as it's the correct voltage, but since it says solar in the name wasn't sure if it was recommended or not

Not necessarily. Some will but with wind if your batteries are full there needs to be an outlet for the energy or the motor will burn up. I honestly do not know that much about wind but this is what I have gathered over the last year.

The best value is 280 Ahr generic cells from any of the vendors reported here. The price is generally around $80 a piece but the freight quotes may vary depending on quantity and vendor. It also may vary based on market since things are still confused in the freight spot market. Specify DDR for door to door delivery including customs.
