Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Yes I got my prismatic LiFePo4 cells about a month ago. I assembled them with a BMS and have them installed now. I can't really vouch for the capacity of the cells. I feel like it may be quite a bit lower than advertised, but I'm not sure because I am using conservative cutoff values to stop...

Adding remote on/off to inverter - Help

You may be looking at an RJ9 connector as at least mine uses this non-registered connector rather than the RJ12. So you will find it does not plug into regular RJ12 female jacks.

    Nickel Iron (Ni-Fe) Battery

The idea that if SHTF you can make your own lye and replace the electrolyte.... while technically true... I would say you could just buy a big box of lye for $20 and sit that next to the battery and you'd have your electrolyte for the next 100 years. They are an interesting battery...

    Need a recommendation for a charger/controller

How much power is copious power? 1000w, 2000w, 5000w? more? Do you require load dumping(for heating or anything else)? If so don't go with Victron Energy because they only offer that in the very expensive models or you probably have to buy some expensive add on thing to get that feature.

Adding remote on/off to inverter - Help

Yea my inverter has a pretty weird switch. Turns out this may be the hardest part of the arduino setup I'm doing is figuring out how to get the arduino to properly communicate with the inverter.

That looks pretty sweet. Was that from AliExpress?

BMS common port vs seperate port

Yea I would be wary of that. For it to offer both charge and discharge at 100A it will need twice as many MOSFETs as a similar rated common port BMS. I would compare the price between the common port version and the separate port version. If it really has double the amount of MOSFETs, then...

Not passing current through the MOSFETs

Hello. I am trying to design an arduino circuit using one of these BMS from aliexpress. I plan to not pass current through the MOSFETs but use them as a signal to tell my arduino when they are open or closed. I intend to send 5volts to the positive and read the negative on a digital pin of...

Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Yes I can do that. I will be checking the voltage of each cell as well. Hopefully they included bolts nuts and bus bars for the terminals.

Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Opening up the box? I'm getting raw cells. So the only way to open them up would be to start taking the cells apart.... which I certainly will not be doing lol

Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Yea I will let you know. To be honest I don't plan on doing an amp hour test or anything like that. I'm new to this stuff and taking it one step at a time. But I will let you know if I get dinged on customs charges, and if I'm impressed with the overall packaging, and appearance of the...

    DIY Solar monitoring.

I'm going to be implementing arduino into the off-grid system I am building. The arduino is needed in my case for a few reasons: 1. I want to be able to use the BMS as a switch to turn off the inverter, but my inverter requires a pulse signal to turn on and off so I cannot use the mosfet...

    Alibaba LiFePo4 batteries

You did some funny math there... You calculated the watt hours of a 12.5ah cell. The cells are 200ah. The specs are for a single cell, and the ad is for a lot of 16 cells. I went with the same product but only 8 cells. So 5.12 kWh for $1074 That's $209.77 per kWh. Not too bad. It seems a...

Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

hmmm. Well Aliexpress was dragging their feet on verifying my purchase... So i started shopping around. DHgate actually called me yesterday and I was able to confirm with them my purchase. Big price difference between the two offerings, so I guess I can expect to have to make up for that in...

    Can panels overpower charge controller?

I imagine if you crack one of these MPPTs open you've got a transformer with half a dozen or so leads sticking out of it. The controller decides which lead to pull the current from depending on voltage etc. and open and closes mosfets to allow that to happen. So long as you don't exceed the...

    Can panels overpower charge controller?

Ok so no all charge controllers are designed using the same basic electric circuit then. Good to know. I suppose to Victron is safe to have current regulation. That really is how(in my opinion) these things ought to be built. Every other appliance that we use daily works like this. You...

    2P4S or 4S2P and why?

I would just go 2P4S with a single BMS and call it perfect.

Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Hello, I live in Canada and I just ordered this https://www.dhgate.com/product/us-eu-tax-free-ups-or-fedex-8pcs-lot-deep/480124765.html Ad says it will be here in under 3 weeks. Am I going to have a hefty bill to pay to customs when it arrives? I hadn't considered this before but three free...

    Can panels overpower charge controller?

I'm curious now what would happen if I connected for example 10kW of panels to the charge controller(for the sake of argument). If the panels are connected in parallel at 24V nominal. Would the CC just make use of 1400 watts and not allow any more energy to pass? Or would the transformer...

    Can panels overpower charge controller?

I'm not 100% certain on this just going on what burtinator was saying but... My CC is rated for 60amps max short circuit current. If I put 6 9.9amp panels in parallel I get 59.4 amps(pushing it pretty close). Yes I will technically have 1830watts of panels, but the charge controller will only...

Thank you Burtinator. That's good news for me. It looks like I should be safe to connect 2 more panels at a later date if I decide to upgrade. Here's the panels I have...

    Can panels overpower charge controller?

I have 4 24volt nominal 305watt panels I am curious what happens if I connect 2series 3parallel to a charge controller rated for 100volts and 50amps? with 2 of these panels in series that's around 80volts open circuit. Well below 100v of the charge controller. Under ideal conditions I get...

    Alibaba LiFePo4 batteries

This thread does not inspire a lot of confidence. "buyer beware" I don't want to flush thousands of dollars down the toilet. Here's a good deal I'm looking at. I'm considering splitting this order between myself and a friend and we can each make our own 24V bank from it...

    Nickel Iron Batteries

Hello, Has anyone here looked into Nickel Iron batteries? They are heavy batteries only suited for stationary applications, but I am very intrigued by them. I am researching how they can be made in DIY fashion. I've done a bit of research and it looks like it may be feasible to manufacture...

Not recommended due to Low Capacity

That's a good point. Now at least I will understand what the tradeoff is. It is for my dad, so I will suggest that he decide if he wants to double his battery size in the next year or so. We will have a good idea of what the system can deliver vs what his needs are by then as well.

Not recommended due to Low Capacity

Cool so I have my panels installed as of today. Next I am ordering parts for the battery and charger and all the other things I need along with it. I am going to build a box in which everything that isn't the panels goes. Inside the box will be the charge controller, BMS, Batteries, Temp...

Not recommended due to Low Capacity

Hmmm. I looked into it. Because I am building my own battery from prismatic cells I will have access to the terminals of each 3.2V cell. So what I can do is just parallel cell 1 from from the first battery with cell 1 from the second etc. Then I still only need one BMS for the whole thing...

Not recommended due to Low Capacity

Yes, the more I think about it, I think he was talking about the Tesla pack that he had installed in his RV. So I think I am moving forward with the idea of buying LiFePO4 cells from aliexpress, wiring them in series, and using Will's instructional videos and website as a guide. I will be...

Not recommended due to Low Capacity

Hello! I'm new here. I've been watching a lot of the videos on youtube, and I recall in one of Will Prowse's videos he says that he doesn't recommend a certain type of battery anymore because there is a limited amount of useable discharge due to the voltage not matching with what the inverter...
