What do you use to clean a sticky pollen panel?

PV production is currently effected by all the layers of pollen & other crap that has collected on my panels. I use the Ryobi foam cannon & their soap w/ the pressure washer. I leave the foam on the panel for 5 or 10 minutes, so as to loosen up the deposits. Spray it off w/ the hose, very good...

Just installed some EasyStarts on 5 ton AC

That is what we did, put a Micro-Air EasyStart on the 4T compressor, no changes to the air handler. Also put some of the other things on the solar: 2-pool pumps, well pump, water heater. Made a BIG difference in the Summer electric bill.

    DC Lighting plan

We are on grid, and so have 120/240vac available. For some rooms, I use 24vdc LED strips: https://www.superbrightleds.com/led-strips-and-bars/led-strip-lights-by-voltage/24-volt-led-strip-lights?rownumber=99799 I buy used, industrial DIN rail 24vdc power supplies to run them. Now they make...

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

The Riffraff tool is on my list, when I need to do injectors & cups! Riffraff has helped me keep the old 7.3 on the road for decades.

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

Two recent projects: Outdoor shower: Summer in the tropics, working outside, it will be nice to cool off, and wash off, especially after mowing the yard, which I normally do in months starting with "J". Diesel repairs: My 25 year old Diesel Ford van has almost 300k miles on it. Hoping to...

Anyone in the US still on the Starlink wait list?

Bought a Gen-3 last week @ Home Depot (veteran discount!) Not sure which plan to purchase, probably going w/ "Roam", for traveling in the RV. Any advice on a pipe mast mount bracket source?

    Mounting/moving heavy wall-mounted batteries

I moved the 12, 267lb batteries using a cheap harbor freight hoist. Believe it was designed for a pick-up truck bed, but worked OK for my small trailer.

    Mounting/moving heavy wall-mounted batteries

We did this to install a 120lb inverter on the wall. Made a lifting frame for the inverter, used the engine hoist, worked great!

    Prepping for impending grid outage

Yes, when the grid to inverter breaker is closed, grid events are seen by the inverters. I open the breaker in cases where risk is present. Even though I find the web site https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en.html virtually incomprehensible, it is possible to obtain some advance warning of...

    Prepping for impending grid outage

"Grid down scenario" is the #1 reason we invested in all this solar gear. Need electricity to operate the well pump & refrigeration, among other things. (Reason #2 was to reduce the monthly electric bill) Hurricanes are the main reason for prolonged grid outages. Have been through a few in the...

Flooded lead acid - how to calculate a practical AH rating?

I have not equalized the FLA's yet. Installed 10 months ago. The batteries are in "standby". They spend 99.9% of their time fully charged. I am using the 3-stage charging from the Schneider charge controllers, as Rolls told me to do that, rather than use the 2-stage charging from the...

Schneider XW Pro LBCO & current question

I asked Rolls tech support about the LBCO, after reading this tech note: https://support.rollsbattery.com/en/support/solutions/articles/246443-low-voltage-disconnect-lvd-lvco- Changed the setting from 46 to 45, (1.875 VPC) works better now. Rolls explained that while 45vdc is a dead battery...

    Solar water heater

Our 2006 Sears 80 gallon electric WH is still working fine. (Made for Sears by AO Smith) I have replaced an element and thermostat. It is on a mechanical timer, turns on the WH once a day around 12 noon. (Graph is from August, so heat pump is cycling 24x7) If the ancient thing gives out...

How big of a solar panel array do you guys call adaquate?

After 3 years working on the solar power project, I still need more panels. Added more each year, after learning how cloudy days effect production. Have 3 MPPT charge controllers, each rated at 6kw, but rated as 8.5kw OK for over-paneling. So far, only have 15,560 of PV, distributed across all...

    Suggestions for CAT5 surge protector

Off-grid, so you have no utility power or data/phone/cable coming in from the street-side. Decades ago when we bought this place, a lightning strike zapped all the phones, tv's computers, microwave, etc. I subsequently implemented UL 1449 - three layers...

    Suggestions for CAT5 surge protector

I used many Polyphaser surge protection devices over the years, excellent quality. Grounding and bonding are very important for these to work. https://www.polyphaser.com/surge-protector-4-pair-gigabit-ethernet-ixg-05 Lightning is so bad here, I gave up on metallic conductors for low voltage...

Just installed some EasyStarts on 5 ton AC

Thanks for the reminder for buying some spare boards, working on it. When I could not patch & repair our 35+ year old R-22 FHP system, I obtained quotes from vendors for a modern replacement. The factory brands (Carrier, Trane, etc) were more $$$ than I had to spend, so I went for the "Supply...

Schneider XW Pro LBCO & current question

The batteries came with 4/0 cables, which match the Schneider cables, so good there. Schneider shunt is 500A. Batteries recently watered, I'll check the SG. Feb-7 2024 SG is 1.265, which is 100% charged:

Schneider XW Pro LBCO & current question

Wondering if I should change the LBCO, and/or some other values? Situation: Grid went down about noon. We switched the house over to solar via the giant transfer switch. Shut off all the breakers for non-essential loads, so as to prolong battery charge. Schneider alarm! I forgot that the...
