Rant: EG4 48v 100ah battery has faulty BMS. Signature solar customer service is TERRIBLE

Colt, I fixed it by disconnecting my PV array. EG4 was then able to turn on without a short circuit alarm and then the MPP LV6048 was able to power up. I was the able to reconnect my PV array.

Rant: EG4 48v 100ah battery has faulty BMS. Signature solar customer service is TERRIBLE

This has not been my experience with SS. I had an issue recently with an EG4 Lifepower4 going into short circuit alarm when being turned on. To start I was unable to reach anyone in support via phone and finally after many pointless emails was told just to buy another battery. I did eventually...

    EG4-Lifepower4 Short Circuit Protection

McRod, I placed one end of the resistor on the EG4 + terminal and connected the other end of the resistor to the + battery wire. That allowed me to turn on the EG4 without a short circuit alarm being tripped, which then allowed the LV6048 to power up. Of course this was not a real solution to...

Z, I am completely off grid. I’m pretty sure the circuit board gets power from the battery.

    EG4-Lifepower4 Short Circuit Protection

Ok after disconnecting my PV array from the MPP LV6048 I was able to turn on the Lifepower4 without it going into alarm mode and then turn on the LV6048. Everything is running fine after then reconnecting the PV array. SS support was useless and they said exactly what Robby said they would...

    EG4-Lifepower4 Short Circuit Protection

So sten I had the exact same battery behavior happen to me last night. I have a Lifepower4 and MPP LV6048 that has been running fine since early Apr. 2022. I noticed last night that I couldn’t contact my Raspberry Pi Running SolarAssistant to check on the system. Went down stairs and saw...

Portable solar panels for travel trailer

I have 2 of these for my camper : https://www.amazon.com/SUNPOWER-Portable-Monocrystalline-Lightweight-Connectors/dp/B0779PCVW4/ref=sr_1_3?crid=18LIKKID50PHN&keywords=sunpower+100+watt+flexible+solar+panel&qid=1655065291&sprefix=Sunpower+%2Caps%2C277&sr=8-3 A little pricey but very high...

    RV Inverter Lithium upgrade

Renogy and Victron sell DCDC chargers with about 20 A draw, not the 10A you are looking for but I think doable with a 7 pin RV trailer plug.

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

    Sounds like a smart approach!

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

So you might be able to avoid the expense of a new alternator by using an inexpensive thermocouple thermometer like this and monitoring alternator temps. Seems like temps over 225F could be a problem (see this )
  11. D

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

I’m not an expert on alternators but I think your experience with generators is applicable here. Running close to 100% of capacity for long periods will impact lifetime usually because of excess heating. This suggests not using more than 2/3 of your alternator capacity. So a DCDC charger load of...

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

Should be fine connecting DC-DC charger and MPPT together to battery busbar (see this and Victron system diagram above) even if they have diff charge profiles. Make sure your battery can handle combined current of MPPT and DCDC charger. Currrents are additive so if you are charging at 80 A and...

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

So on reading the Sterling charger spec sheet more closely I see this : 6) Night Time Setting: Allows the unit to ran at half the power so the fan noise is kept down. So supplying 35A might be doable for your alternator without too much stress
  14. D

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

MPPT controllers usually require input voltage to be at least 5 volts greater than output voltage
  15. D

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

Yeah so the spec sheet on the Sterling charger says that at 12V in and 48V out the “Amps in” is 70A. So assuming 90% efficiency the current output at 48V would be .9 * 12/48 * 70A = 15.75 A
  16. D

Using alternator for 48v battery bank

So the Sterling DC-DC charger could suck up to 70 A from your 120 A alternator which I think could stress your alternator if done for long periods of time with other high vehicle loads. I’ve attached a Victron doc which shows a system similar to yours, except with Victron products of course...

    813ah battery bank, 3P18S or 18S3P?

So each of the 3 banks of 18s cells could supply 100 A for 2.71 hours or 300 A for 2.71 hours or 813 AH for all 3 banks in parallel.

    Direct to water heating.

No the output is not a 150 kHz square wave but a DC level up to 120 volts. The 150 kHz is the frequency used to drive the switch in the boost circuit shown here

Request for comment, criticism, questions, tire kicking, and musing (early alpha system design)

    If your panels have bypass diodes (most do ?) wouldn’t it be a little better than this ? I think with bypass diodes a partially shaded panel could still source 10 A but at maybe 20 volts instead of 30 V. So power would be : 2 x 10A x 30V + 1 x 10A x 20V = 600W + 200W = 800 Watts This is based...

    Inverters with remote wire

I use this 12V 2000W Renogy inverter with my ElectroDacus SBMS0 and am able to have the SBMS0 turn off the inverter when battery drops below a programmable SOC. I can’t vouch for the quality of this inverter as I haven’t used it much but when testing it has no problem with my 1500W heat gun...

Looking for resources to learn about general electronics, electricity, & and circuitry

If you really want to understand the fundamentals of electricity, Feynman can explain it better than anyone : https://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/II_toc.html Heavy on theory but Feynman makes it digestible.

    current flow concept

As I am a simple minded person, I can offer a simple analogy : Electrons are moving to a state of lower potential energy much like a ball rolling down a hill.

    current flow concept

Yes kinda like the earth sucking you in :)
  25. D

    current flow concept

Yes you are exactly correct. The positive terminal is attracting or sucking up negatively charged electrons.
  26. D

    current flow concept

Conventional current flow is positive charge flowing from the positive terminal (cathode). For metals this is equivalent to electrons (negative charges) flowing into the positive terminal. A good overview is here

I just took off the back cover of the remote and found out that the middle two wires of the RJ-11 connector (red and green wires) are tied to the on/off switch.

Best All-In-One, plug & play 1500W output system (besides Goal Zero)

The Titan solar generator (https://www.pointzeroenergy.com/titan-solar-generator/) is able to do 1500 watts but is not cheap ($3000). Will did a video on this unit. Is 1000Ah for real? That's at least 12 KWh.

    Three separate battery systems?

I think your approach makes a lot of sense. After reading Dacian’s (electrodacus.com) analysis of MPPT SCCs I wonder about reliability of DC/DC converters. Maybe best to avoid the issue by using existing 12 volt house system. Also bonus not needing to rewire anything ! Anyone have thoughts on...

    Hello and design review

Hello All, I've been lurking on this forum for a while and learning a lot. Thanks everyone ! So I'd like to put together a solar generator system for my 5th wheel RV. I want it to be modular and expandable so I can start small and cheap and eventually expand to be able to power the entire RV...

BMS connections for 12v DIY LiFePO4 system

The "System Schematic For Large Inverters" section on https://www.mobile-solarpower.com/design-your-own-12v-lifepo4-system.html does not show cell voltage sense connections from the BMS to the battery. Is this intentional or an oversight ?
