MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

There really is no better alternative that I know of. It's just a matter of which method is safest. Sure grounding everything together can potentially cause some bugs but it beats the alternative of having a floating neutral.

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

A lot of people think that just touching electricity alone is enough to shock you but it's not true. If you don't give it an exit point your potential simply rises to match whatever energized part you've come in contact with. It's the same reason birds don't get shocked when sitting on a...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

Just because you're not understanding it doesn't mean what I'm saying is wrong or I'm using some word salad. In order to get shocked, you have to give electricity an entrance point and an exit point. Period. Aka being in series with a path back to the source. That's taught in every Electrical...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

Anytime you get in between a path for electricity to flow you are effectively in series with it. I guess technically you could consider that a parallel path, but for you to be actually shocked, the electricity has to go through you somehow, which means you are in series with that path. Maybe...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

The reason you got shocked off a sink faucet (I'm guessing) is because the house you were in had a compromised main neutral. That's one downside of the way we do things in the US. If your main neutral is compromised or lost, current will try to find its way back to the transformer any way it...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

True that it takes all available paths, but the point I was making was that you won't be shocked by a neutral alone by being connected to it in parallel which is what that other guy seemed to be alluding to. As long as the ground/neutral bond is maintained, you can't be shocked by a neutral...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

Thats not how electricity works though. The input neutral isn't a shock hazard because it returns to the source (the inverter). That's why you can open your electrical panel and grab hold of the neutral bar and it won't do anything to you. It doesn't want to go through you, it wants to get...

Is it possible to use a 120v relay as an automatic transfer switch?

And even if tying all the neutrals together could cause problems, some relays have 2 NO and 2 NC contacts in them anyway, so you could break both the neutrals and hots.

Is it possible to use a 120v relay as an automatic transfer switch?

My fridge is currently running off my inverter/battery bank and is by far the biggest drain on the system. I was wondering if it would be possible to use a relay to run the fridge on grid power while the grid is on, but on inverter power if the grid goes off. Basically I want to power the...

Yes that's what I did. Sorry, I forgot to update this thread. It seems to be working fine so far.

New BLS Battery Cells - Small amount of liquid leaking from the vent cap - normal?

UPDATE: I cycled the battery 10-15 times and it's still leaking electrolyte. So, I contacted BLS once again and they agreed to send me a replacement cell. I have to say, the customer service was pretty impressive, which was the last thing I expected from AliExpress.

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

Yes, it disconnects the neutral. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any reason the neutral in and out can't be jumpered to prevent this though.

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

These inverters are weird. Do not bond the neutral and ground in the critical loads panel because you will get current back on your ground wire to the inverter. If you bond the neutral and ground at the inverter (which is what I did) it will work fine while it's in battery /solar mode, but if it...

New BLS Battery Cells - Small amount of liquid leaking from the vent cap - normal?

I'm not sure either. I haven't even charged them over 3.4v. I'm gonna run it through 10 cycles and see if it stops gassing. If not, I'll try to get a replacement cell.

New BLS Battery Cells - Small amount of liquid leaking from the vent cap - normal?

Yes. I put a piece of packing tape over to see if it's still gassing, and the tape is clearly developing a small bubble under it. BLS Battery told me after 10 cycles it should be fine, but to me a LiFePO4 cell gassing like that means the vent is pierced, which raises questions about how long the...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

I tested mine as well and was surprised to find that there was no neutral - ground bond internally in the inverter. So to alleviate this I simply put a jumper between the neutral and ground on the AC OUT. It seems to have alleviated my issues because I now have 120v to ground whereas before I...

New BLS Battery Cells - Small amount of liquid leaking from the vent cap - normal?

Also, one of the cells has a sweet, fruity smell coming from the vent. I message BLS Battery and they said some outgassing is normal for the first few cycles. Anybody have a second opinion?

New BLS Battery Cells - Small amount of liquid leaking from the vent cap - normal?

I've had these cells for about 2 days and I've noticed on 2 of the cells there's a tiny amount of liquid bubbling out of the vent as they're being charged. I've been very careful not to overcharge them. Is this something to be concerned about? The voltage of the cells are all in the normal...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

If I were you I would just use the same ground wire for your AC INPUT and OUTPUT connections as your bonding wire. Just bridge the ground input and output in the inverter so you have a solid ground from your main panel to your subpanel (once again I would assume the grounds would be bridged...

MPP Solar LV5048 Bonding & Grounding question.

    1. No 2. Yes You never want to bond the neutral and ground in a sub panel (counting the inverter as a main panel) because you don't want current on the ground wire. I can't say for sure, but I would think the ground and neutral would be bonded in the inverter already. You could check this with...

LiFePO4 Prismatic Cells Top Balancing Problem

I have 16 135ah cells. I'm not sure what the SOC is, but my power supply only goes up to 5A. I feel like it will take years at this point ?

LiFePO4 Prismatic Cells Top Balancing Problem

Hello, I'm trying to top balance my new lithium cells with a regulated power supply. I set the voltage to 3.4v (I was planning to do this is steps) and it showed 1 amp of current. However, after leaving it for a couple hours, the current just fluctuates between .990 and 1 amp of current...

    MPP Solar, GFCI AC input

Yea. I think these MPP Solar units have some current leakage to ground. I have an LV2424 on the way, I'll check for any current on the ground wire when I get it.

    MPP Solar, GFCI AC input

Do you have a GFCI breaker or a GFCI receptacle?

    MPP Solar, GFCI AC input

The only thing I could think to do is to run a new circuit from your panel and use a regular breaker. If the unit is in your garage I'm not sure if that would be an NEC violation though. Garages receptacles are supposed to be 100% GFCI protected, and for good reason, however I don't know if...

MPP LV 5048 isn't UL listed = Illegal in Massachusetts?

Yea, but I'm interested in the LV2424s (the green ones) as they're able to backfeed the grid, however seeing that they're not UL Listed I don't see how they would pass POCO approval.

MPP LV 5048 isn't UL listed = Illegal in Massachusetts?

You have an MPP solar hybrid unit that got approved? If so, do they not make you provide the UL paperwork?

    MPP Solar LV2424 kicks butt!!!

Are you sure you unplugged a panel from each array? Or did you unplug 2 panels from the same array? If you did, that would make one array half the voltage of the other, and combining different voltages in parallel is a big no no that can cause a funky voltage reading.

    Backfeeding the grid

I'm wondering the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed because of the coronavirus. The lack of UL certification is they only thing keeping me from buying one of these units, as my POCO won't allow me to use an inverter without UL certification to backfeed.
