Solar Install with Net billing with Utility

I live near Vancouver Canada and am being bombarded with companies wanting me to install solar. The interesting part is that the Canadian Govt will provide a $40,000 interest free 10 year loan to do it. I have no idea of what it might cost although I do understand solar as I personally...

    Portable power pack

I have a shop full of tools that are mostly plug-in electric. But from time to time it would be nice to have a battery operated tool for areas where you have no electricity. Instead of buying battery operated tools I thought it might be nice to have a portable power pack for those occasions when...

    Residential Installation.

Im not a complete neophyte when it comes to solar as Ive installed a solar setup on my motorhome but I'm now considering adding solar to my residence. I have a large barn with approximate;y 1200 square feet of south facing roof that I want to add solar to and do net metering with the utility...

    12V vs 24 volt

My motorhome is all 12 volts. Is there any advantage (ignoring weight and size) to using one 200AH 24 volt battery and step it down to 12 volts or use 2 100AH batteries. Is there an efficiency loss going from 24v to 12v? Thx

Stacked Panels with a slide out feature when parked.

I would build a frame that allows you to stack 3 panels high. The top panel wolud be fixed and the second and third one would slide out to the side(one to each side).Use heavy duty drawer slides..If you can;t weld the frame then use 2X2 angle aluminum which is easy to drill etc. You can devise...

Airstreamer looking for some advice on mounting to a curved roof

Seeing as how the problem seems to be air getting UNDER the panels to severe the connection (of any type) why not put an aid deflector at the leading edge of the panel forcing the air over top the panel. Like this (https://oriondesigns.ca/)

Anyone Running A AC Unit From A Modified Sinewave Inverter

    8p1s vs 4p2s PV wiring?

. "My preference is to put as much in series to make for easier wiring, with smaller wire." I may be missing spomething here(likely) but from my experiencewhen installing my own 12v solar on my motrohome the extra cost for hevaier wiring was probably less that $5.

Drilling Through RV Right (Curbside) wall

I would use the hole saw size you need and drill the hole from the inside. If you hit a structure piece it is easy to put a patch on it. At least easier than from the outside. Your getting pretty close to the window frame so there is a good chance there is a structural piece there.

Off grid solar system for maintaining half a dozen batteries (ATV's, tractors, boats, etc).

So you get snow.It doesn't snow every day (just like its not cloudy every day) And when it snows brush it off. (which you can't do with clouds) and the sun may be low in the sky in Manitoba but there generally is lots of it.

    Racking Question - Metal Roof

I have a barn that has metal over shingles on purlins and don't think you want to just fasten the rails to the metal.

    What Battery Charger

I have a small farm with a number of of different vehicles including a motorhome. At this time they all have FLA batteries but I intend to convert the motorhome to LIFEP04. I am now in need of a battery charger (wife ran over the one we have with the tractor) .Is there one that I can use for FLA...

    Battery Capacity needed.

I build tack boxes for storage of saddles and other horse related items. Th boxes are approx. 5'X3'X 5' high and would function like a small clothes closet where the light would be use intermittantly throughout the day. I want to run an led light as well as a charger for a cell phone. I was...

    MC4 Higher than 40a???

To me designing a system in a vehicle(RV) so as to use thinner gauge wire because it is cheaper doesn't make sense. The runs are generally so short the difference is insignificant. ..

    Ideas for simple wind fairing?

Having had a wing on a race car I understand HOW they work. In order to give lift (or downforce) it needs a speciail shape. Not sure if a flat panel could generate much of either.

    Ideas for simple wind fairing?

I would make a cardboard template to "fill in" the areas on each side of the hump and go to a sheet metal shop and have them bend it up in metal(in my case I would use .050 aluminum) and then glue it(VHB tape) and/or rivets. You can attach it either on the top of the panel edge or the front...

    Will a 300 Amp.Alternator play nice with Lifep04 Battery.

"why does the vehicle have a 300A alternator when a commercial van has a beefy 180A alternator. " Because its a converted bus that, in service, had a huge a/c system with a big electric motor running the evaporator. All that has now been removed and it now has the normal motorhome stuff.LED...

Where/How to integrate Lifepo/solar into 2004 Roadtrek system

In general in your existing system 110 power goes into the converter as 110 and then come out as 12v which goes to all the lights and other 12 equipment. On mine when I installed house batteries (I originally ran house off starter batteries) I put in a bus bar that got 12v power from the...

    Will a 300 Amp.Alternator play nice with Lifep04 Battery.

I have a bus/motorhome that has a 300 amp 12v alternator. I keep reading how lithium batteries will take power fast enough to burn out a Van alternatior. What do you think you happen with an alternator of this capacity? Regards Fred

    Gauge Wire for LED lites

All 12v DC. Tail/brake light, and signal lights. Brake lights are only used intermittantly as well as signal lites.Only the tail lights would be on for any length of time driving at night(which I seldom do anyway).

    Gauge Wire for LED lites

I am building a lite bar for the back of my car when towing behind my motorhome. I have a ton of 22 ga wire I would like to use. I tested the lights with about 200 ft of this wire and it seemed to work fine as LED requires less power than incandescents. Is there a problem using the gauge wire...

    Torquing?

I think the problem for a lot of people who aren't mechanically inclined is they have no concept of torque so they wind up tightening a 1/4" nut with a 1 foot long wrench. Of course it will either strip the threads or break. Other that crtical engine parts(head bolts, rod ends) I tend to torque...

RVing with Pets: to park in the sun or not to park in the sun

We have 2 dogs that are similar to your cat situation. Personally, I wouldn't leave them alone in my motrohome realying on electric devices to keep them safe(i.e. cool) At home its different. The house insn't going to get to 150 deg. if the air conditioner quits(actually we don't have a/c in the...
