  • Post in thread: Canadian lithium Options MSI and Lynac

I am not affiliated with these companies. Thought I'd share as it seems like there are a few Canucks on this forum. Marine Solutions Inc - Saw their goods at the boat show and bought a solar kit from them. This looks pretty robust - $2400CAD for 3kwh or 240AH. Seems like a nice option for a...
  • Post in thread: Xuba Electronics: DEAL - 280AH LiFePo4 cells. Purchase & Review

I was looking at those capacity testers too -- building up a bench of tools -- It would be great for us noobs to have a list of tools to pick up (first, beginner set, next intermediate level... etc. I was also looking to pick up the ISDT battery balancer and charger as well... this is...
  • Post in thread: IWISS Lug crimper review

I picked up this combo (high-leverage cutter and cable lug crimper). There is a cheaper crimper only option in stock now (that wasn't when I bought) I had read the reviews and noted that the crimper was not always sized correctly. My short assessment after wiring my boat. I used 6AWG to...
  • Post in thread: BatteryGo balance meter link?

My decision point is whether I spend a few hundred $ on a bench power supply or if I just pick up an AC 12V LiFePO4 charger. (Given the Q8's ability to accept differing input DC voltages I thought perhaps I'd make an XT60 connector for say a victron smart blue 15A charger and use that as my...
  • Post in thread: Battery Case

Has anyone seen larger cases like this one that could fit the 280Ah or 200Ah (or 150Ah) aluminum cells? The dimensions for the 280Ah cells are 174mm x 72mm by 205mm high The dimensions for the 200Ah cells are 175mm x 55mm by 205mm high. If I went with the 150Ah cells, I might go 2P4S and those...
  • Post in thread: Putting it all together

So I've picked up a set of the 280Ah cells a solar charge controller and panels and the chargery BMS. Next up are a set of tools and meters but a question for the more experienced: Would you recommend I also pick up a set of lower AH cells to "learn" on? I want to wire them together on a...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 at dock

Thanks to everyone who replied. All great points - I have the solar but have not installed it yet but i should do so soon. The shorepower charger has float and an absorption setting that could be turned off (14.4V and 13.8V for the LiFePO4 charge profile. Interesting there is one that is...
  • Post in thread: Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Hey! I'm in Ontario Canada too. Been eyeing a few options (looking for around 200Ah and the Ruixu 100Ah -- Will's cautions noted) look tempting to construct a 200Ah cell. If there are other local enthusiasts, lmk. Maybe a group buy or local moral support!
  • Post in thread: Just Place new Order on Alibaba- 280AH x 8 for 1260.00 USD Delivered, Grade A to Canada

How does this one compare with the one from Will's page? (that's the one I ordered)
  • Post in thread: 180W Battery tester will not draw current

Tagging onto this thread. Has anyone been able to set the low voltage disconnect on this device? Mine is set at 0 but when I press and hold the button I cannot change the low voltage value. What am I doing wrong?
  • Post in thread: DC Clamp Meter

I bought a holdpeak anemometer for sailing/race management. It's definitely YMMV - and you get what you pay for - the accuracy can be off by up to 10%. I purchased the Will recommended model (Klein CL380) off amazon for $106CAD earlier this year which was a pretty reasonable price for an...
  • Post in thread: Spare cell considerations in DIY LiFePo4 packs

I am looking to construct a 300Ah battery pack for our sailboat house system - For battery box size considerations I think 8 cells is the limit at this time, unless I build a new box. I am still dubious on the number of cycles these cells will produce and what the failure rate of individual...
  • Post in thread: Just Place new Order on Alibaba- 280AH x 8 for 1260.00 USD Delivered, Grade A to Canada

Fascinating. I checked out the posting for the EVE 280AH cells with Donguon Billion ... and got a quote for shipping to Ontario Canada for $418USD. I didn't realize they post your inquiry for others to quote on but I now have quotes from many other companies but I don't think i got one from...
  • Post in thread: EVE 280Ah Lifepo4

What charger or method are you using to test cycle? I've ordered the capacity tester discussed on this forum but haven't picked a charging set up. options are variable DC power supply? Using a ISDT active balancer would take too long. My bank will end up in my boat which has a shorepower...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 Voltage Chart?

I have had a bit more time to observe. I believe the fluctuating voltage is due to the BMS cutting out due to a over Voltage on one cell. I've turned off charging for the time being and the cell voltages have settled into a tight range. I will have to take the pack apart to retest for capacity...
  • Post in thread: Pre-Announcing XUBA September promotion

right now i am using plywood and threaded rod to compress. I wouldn't mind something a little cleaner looking that fully encloses the cells. The posts that are not used for battery terminals are exposed but protected from shorts with rubber and electrical tape. Even within a Group 27 battery...

  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 Voltage Chart?

I turned on the ac charger this morning to try to fully charge the battery. Now an odd occurence: the Voltage and the amps from the 40A charger fluctuate on the BMV app display ( 13-23A and 13.98 to 14.4V. The charge setting is 14.4V. I dont use the ac charger often as the Solar usually gets us...
  • Post in thread: Benchtop Power Supply for under $100.

I just started using a 15V 40 amp PS from circuit specialists. My observations: the voltage display is only to 1 decimal place so I can't fine tune the V. The device required a bit of fiddling - I am only using it at <20A right now to be on the safer side, and top balancing 4 280Ah cells that...
  • Post in thread: Finally found a LiFePO4 BMS with Low-temp Charging Protection

For the multiple 10AWG wires coming out to the Battery ground and the negative bus, do you put individual ring terminals on each wire, then stack them in the stud or do you create a single terminal?
  • Post in thread: Canadian buyer hoping I don't get dinged by Customs import duties shipping from China

Keep in mind that Canada also has CETA (European trade agreement) which got rid of a lot of tariffs on other things (like boat parts). I do worry about the cycle life of these chinese cells - as the math on Lithium only works if you can get the Depth of Discharge AND the cycle life gain over...
  • Post in thread: Replacement JBD Temperature Sensor

My temperature sensor was damaged and now works intermittantly. I understand it is an NTC 10k Thermistor and the connector is a JST GH 1.25mm pitch connector. I am having a very tough time locating a replacement (either on Aliexpress - to arrive in Jul) or the components to reassemble an...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 at dock

Left for maybe a week at a time likely. I have the solar but have not connected/installed yet. Need to take some deep breaths before drilling through my deck to run the cables. But even with the solar - would I want the batteries topped all the time or set it to get it to say 60-70% then...
  • Post in thread: JBD BMS troubleshooting

Aha! The temp probe wire was frayed and almost pulled out of the plug... are these available generally (like a robotics/electronics store) or should I try to repair it?
  • Post in thread: 280ah Battery Top and Bottom Support Design.

If the aluminum cells do not need compression (and assuming you are keeping the cells from moving) would adding these top and bottom supports be redundant? I have limited height to work with so every mm is precious...
  • Post in thread: charging lithium batteries with high amp marine alternator

Sorry. I should have flagged that I was adding my question to the existing conversation than starting a new thread. @mods if that is preferable I can do that.
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 Voltage Chart?

Tbh ive never observed how this charger worked in the past. I suspected it killed my AGM batteries but coild not prove it. Now that the battery is reaching the top i am more concerned to see the Voltage range up to 15v. Im not so certain about this charger now. (But i don’t use the AC charger...
  • Post in thread: Alternator charging with Xantrex "Ideal Regulator Output Module"

With regard to the B2B chargers, do they also limit the current from the alternator - if the B2B is a 30A charger would it limit the draw from my 120A charger alternator to a maximum of 30A? Edit I should clarify my question...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 Voltage Chart?

The charge profile is set to LFP (14.4V) but i have been suspicious of this charger (cristec 40A) i think i will be looking to swap out for a victron charger inverter next season/over the winter. I will also check the connectors to ensure loose connections are the cause for fluctuating voltage...
  • Post in thread: MC4 Connectors exposed to moisture - Degraded Panel output

Hi - I have a sailboat that is hauled out for the winter and the solar panels are disconnected and stored. I realize the solar wire (not plugged) has exposed the contacts to corrosion. Is there a way to test for corrosion to see if this is why the panel (sunpower semiflexible 110W - 4 years...
  • Post in thread: EVE 280Ah Lifepo4

That's impressive! When you wire the cell monitor (does it do any active balancing?) Are there leads from each cell's positive to each of the BMS AND the cell monitor or can the BMS and cell monitor share the balance leads somehow? Looks amazing for group 31 footprint -- may need a bit more...
  • Post in thread: 150/160W Eco-Worthy semi-flexible solar panels

Thanks for the reply. Reason for semiflexible is they will be mounted on a canvas Bimini (think sun cover) and in cAnada only for about 5 months out of the year. I hear you on the longevity. These 150W panels are the same price as 100W SunPower panels so I thought I'd try to get more capacity...
  • Post in thread: BMS vs Smart Battery Protect

I think I understand the purposes of each (BMS - Low voltage disconnect would disconnect if a cell voltage drops below a certain value) and Victron's Smart Battery Protect would disconnect the loads (no inverted in my setup) if the battery voltage drops below a threshold. Would the SBP and BMS...
  • Post in thread: Solar Panel Isolation / Breaker / Switch

Panel voltages are close to the rated value of the Blue Seas 285 breaker - each panel (Sunpower 110W) is rated at 18.8V Vmpp and 22.8 Voc. If i wire them in series, the voltage could exceed the maximum rating for a 45V BSS 285 breaker but be well under the current rating. If I wire the panels...
  • Post in thread: Ring connectors for BMS balance cable

I can't seem to find ring connectors that fit the gauge of wire (24AWG) that came with my BMS (the JBDXXXX) the Ancor connectors only work to 22 AWG - what do people use for connecting their wires to their battery terminals? I tried a robotics and maker shop and they did not have anything like...
  • Post in thread: Ring connectors for BMS balance cable

Thanks @JoeHam! I was wondering if i should use solder to bulk up the end connection. Your solution is a bit easier.
  • Post in thread: 180W Battery tester will not draw current

i don't think I received two cables - the only other was a usb cable. The cables I am using are about AWG 10 or 12 and have alligator clips. I could make some new cables (the ones supplied are ridiculously short).
  • Post in thread: Making a Marine 200AH 12v system

I would second what luthj said. I picked up 4 280Ah cells (see the massively long thread in the battery forum). Together with BMS they occupy the same space as a group 27 battery. I would go with those cells unless you already have the 100ah cells. When I did the calculations those eve cells...
  • Post in thread: charging lithium batteries with high amp marine alternator

If you have a recent model Yanmar, Balmar makes a retrofit kit that add's smart regulation capability to the stock valeo alternator. As you stated, it's not cheap - and would require the 614 (or other) regulator to be added.
  • Post in thread: EVE 280Ah Lifepo4

Did you also order from Billion Electronic Technology on Alibaba? I am getting a quote for shipping - though I don't know what to make - they claim these are Grade A cells...
  • Post in thread: Adding additional LFP batteries at a later date

I have had a call with them. Their products look really good and highly engineered. Their pricing reflects their efforts. If I was living aboard and off the dock, it might be worth the investment.
  • Post in thread: Just Place new Order on Alibaba- 280AH x 8 for 1260.00 USD Delivered, Grade A to Canada

I think I can only laugh about this now because the rage inside me is too much. Yesterday I got notification from UPS that my package was set to be delivered [today]. I thought I would avoid the possibility of porch theft and chose their option to pick it up at their depot. I get a...
  • Post in thread: 150/160W Eco-Worthy semi-flexible solar panels

Does anyone have experience with these panels? Amazon seems to have the best deal for these with shipping built in but wondering how reliable these panels are for the cost. Would I be better off picking up two 100W semi flexibles with more of a warranty for about the same price?
  • Post in thread: EVE 280Ah Lifepo4

It is very tempting, even with $418USD shipping to Canada. I am leery of @Maast's post above regarding receiving cells without terminals or post holes. I definitely don't feel comfortable drilling into a battery!
  • Post in thread: JBD BMS troubleshooting

I have an odd situation with my JBD BMS (I think this is the cause). The BMS seems to activate when I connect the cell monitoring harness (I measure 13.5V between the battery terminals, and at the B- and the C-. But when I connect the battery to the circuit, I do not get any voltage or...
  • Post in thread: Replacement JBD Temperature Sensor

I ordered a JST 1.25mm GH connector as advised in another thread and unfortunately it still wasn't the right connector (my temperature probe wires got caught and pulled out of the connector while getting shredded. The connector I am looking for is on the left and a better image of it is below...
  • Post in thread: Alternator charging with Xantrex "Ideal Regulator Output Module"

So after a bunch of question asking and reading, i'm leaning to a B2B charger between the Alternator (and Shore Charger) to the LFP bank. My alternator has a dumb regulator on it that cuts current and voltage after a certain amount of time. I will evaluate this season whether I spend more $$$...
  • Post in thread: Replacing House Bank

that battery box is fantastic. Did you custom fabricate it? (looks like metal from here). What kind of connectors are those that connect the BMSes to the battery negative?
  • Post in thread: Separate MPPT and DC/DC chargers

Found this thread searching for a discussion on the Renogy MPPT DC to DC Charger. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe if both devices are set to charge at the same voltage, then it will only push however much current the battery can receive - if the battery is deeply discharged, then...
  • Post in thread: Can you have too much battery?

After 1 season with a 280Ah I want to capacity test the cells so that I can do exactly that. Program the charging system to charge only to 80% SOC if my usage can be easily accommodated by the day's solar charging.
