  • Post in thread: Stolen solar panels?

You can also get a carbide pen and etch your name, or code number, on your panels to ID them if they are stolen. A carbide pen works on plastic, metal, glass, ceramic, all kinds of things. Permanent ink COULD be washed off by solvents, although not completely in many cases. Sometimes I use the...
  • Post in thread: Testing capacity of AA battery

@snoobler It's the AA cell common to the US. Nominal voltage is 1.5vdc. I will be using a load of about 200-400ma to test the capacity. Link: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R2KK5P7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
  • Post in thread: Off grid teardrop is it possible?

A round dowel pointed directly at the sun will also not make a shadow. Then when the dowel is pointing directly at the sun, angle the face of the panels 90 degrees to this dowel.
  • Post in thread: dirty electricity

I had an RF filter I just plugged in to the wall (110vac) and then my TV plugged in to the RF filter. It seemed to clear up the static I was getting sometimes through the wall plug.
  • Post in thread: Astounded!

Wait, so my PWM charge controller just wastes the extra volts as heat? Then I might get a bit more watts from my solar panels if I use a buck convertor to convert the panels 18v output to 14vdc before it gets to the charge controller, which would have the effect of increasing the amps also.
  • Post in thread: Preferred vendors and products thread, all products

Sorry guys. In a recent video ( part 2: ) Will opened a Riuxu battery and found the battery Riuxu sent him for review did not represent actual batteries mailed to customers. Will opened a battery from another customer and the quality was down and he removed Riuxu batteries from his site. Be...
  • Post in thread: Galvanic Corrosion

I'm guessing this will be more of a problem at times of high humidity, like any Michigan summers. The humidity will increase the corrosion (chemical reaction). Michigan seasons are so humid that my table saw in the garage locked up from rust. Since I don't have a basement I will not replace the...
  • Post in thread: Disaster relief solar for Abaco in the Bahamas. Hurricane Dorian.

An electric fridge uses a compressor and compressors use a LOT of power. How about using a propane fridge? Can you get propane down there? What about designing a solid state fridge using peltier elements? When you apply power, one side gets hot the other side gets cold. They can also generate...
  • Post in thread: Off Grid Gaming

Things with a compressor, like a fridge, use quite a bit of energy when they run, but they don't run 100% of the time. So you really will need a Kill-A-Watt, or something similar, to determine better how many amp hours your fridge uses in an average 24 hour period. This amp hours will be even...
  • Post in thread: Looking for DC ammeter for 10-20vdc with 2 decimal places and a ring

I'm looking for a DC ammeter with a ring to detect current coming from my solar panels going to the charge controller. I already blew one meter as I think I wired it the wrong way. So I'm looking for this simpler option with the ring that one wire goes through. It should have 2 decimal places...
  • Post in thread: An alternative to the traditional wedding march.

"Getting paid $6.80 to wait on tables." When I was a kid I got paid $3.35 minimum wage.
  • Post in thread: Prius inverter pump

Yes. Your power supply must supply enough voltage to run the pump, and the pump will draw as many amps as it needs. If your water pump is powered by solar, and not a battery, how do you power it at night? Normally a PV system charges a battery and items are powered by the battery. I have...
  • Post in thread: Cold Weather Cabin

That's the normal lows up there for most winters, some years it will get to -40F or lower with wind chill.
  • Post in thread: multilevel LED lamps

I like DiodeGoneWild and Big Clive too. Both of them will sometimes have kasplosions.
  • Post in thread: On the road to sunny Arizona

    Welcome!
  • Post in thread: LEDs can generate power too

I didn't know where to put this, but LEDs can generate power, like a solar cell. A red LED can generate 1vdc. Example video from Steve Mould. Fun stuff.
  • Post in thread: How to hook amp hour meter to solar panels before charge controller

Do you mean to get a used panel? Correct. I see what you mean now.
  • Post in thread: What's the port cover called to run wires from outside to inside my house?

Thanks for the link Offgriddle. You're awesome!
  • Post in thread: Will an IR remote control penetrate a himalayan salt block or selenite tower?

I have a selenite tower, it's a large crystal with a 1.2" hole down the center and the walls are translucent, solid material at least 3/4" thick. I want to put a small LED puck inside that changes colors and control it with an IR remote control. Since I cannot find a system that uses an LED puck...
  • Post in thread: My Solar Shed Construction Starts in a Week

I used to live in an HOA here in the US. That's what you deal with when you live with a HOA. When you move in you sign a legal agreement to abide by the rules of the HOA. If you don't, you get sued. You might try to get a variance with the HOA but it can be hard to do, and has to be voted on by...
  • Post in thread: Determine battery type by nominal voltage?

Can you find any model number embedded in the case of the cell then do a google search for that model? See what you come up with.
  • Post in thread: Cheap 4kwh LiFePO4 batteries from Battery Hookup

@Will Prowse Did you open up one of these batteries yet? I'm just curious. :)
  • Post in thread: Any land for Tiny House available?

In Michigan you cannot have any minor children in a house without utility hookups (and appliances) for electricity and heat. People have had their kids taken away in one case when they lived off grid.
  • Post in thread: Why do these charts differ when calling the anode + or -?

Below, the anode is negative. But in this chart below the anode is positive. Can someone help me understand? I'd like to experiment making DIY batteries at home from different materials. I know I can't make them cheaper than batteries from the store, I just like to experiment. Thanks!
  • Post in thread: EDC battery pack

Anker is a very good brand with good customer service. And they are on Amazon. What I do is look for items with at least 4 stars. In general for powerbanks: Generally, the 5.8A output is for all 3 USB ports combined, not 5.8A per port. Each port current output will vary based on the device...
  • Post in thread: Hybrid model

Welcome Rajas. For generating AC, you can make a transformer to convert DC to 220vac, there are many videos on Youtube for that. Here's a YT search to help you: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=generator+convert+to+220vac You also know about the charge controllers that have...
  • Post in thread: Online Watt/Solar Calculators

Watts = amps * volts Volts = watts / amps Amps = watts / volts If you want the thing on the left side of =, you need the other 2 on the right side of the equation. On a related note, there are many ohms law calculator charts too, which can be handy. Here's one. Here's a search for more...
  • Post in thread: Unstable Grid

No problem. You can disagree if you want also, I prefer to have as much experience from other people as possible. :) But I just try to add my 2 cents to help everyone out as a community. The internet is a great place for community, but we need real life community more too.
  • Post in thread: Hi All from Australia

    Hello Australia!
  • Post in thread: Good day all! I'm from the Bahamas.

@BahamianPrepMan Oh wow, I saw pics of that island, it got hit hard. I hope you and your family are ok. There doesn't seem to be a lot of high ground on that island. It's almost like you would need a completely enclosed lifeboat like they have on cruise ships now, to survive a direct hit by a...
