  • Post in thread: Aosmith hybrid water heaters wasted $

I question the real environmental footprint of any high efficiency device if it breaks and needs repair. Replacement parts have carbon footprints too, requiring energy and resources to be made. And then there’s the broken parts off to the landfill…
  • Post in thread: Time to go Solar in central California.

It’s very difficult to cut the cord and continue using 25-70kWh per day without either a major lifestyle change and/or converting some devices (heater, stove, water heater, dryer) to fossil fuel. I recommend going with the biggest solar + battery you can afford. You’ll still be connected to the...
  • Post in thread: Aosmith hybrid water heaters wasted $

Until they come with a 10+ year parts & labor warranty, they seem like a complex solution to a problem while there are proven quiet & reliable, albeit less efficient, products on the market. I don’t need any more headaches.
  • Post in thread: Tesla vs. Sol-Ark

Tesla is under the Energy Storage Systems category, pages 17-18.
  • Post in thread: Hybrid Plug-In Electric Car - vs - Total Electric Car

Carbon fiber and plastic We have an all-electric i3 too and love it in SoCal. We get 4.5mi/kWh, it’s quick and very maneuverable, and can hold a lot. It feels a bit like a Tardis that way.
  • Post in thread: "Renewed" Bluetti units from MaxOak

My brother bought 2 of the AC200P - just received them and say they look new. Charging them up now
  • Post in thread: 1999 Chevy High-top 48V build

If you’re planning to mostly run 12V devices, why have a 48V system with 2 DC-DC converters and their associated losses?
  • Post in thread: Would you bother with solar on this roof?

Beautiful home and property Do a loads calculation to determine how big a battery needed to cover them for 24 hours. Then calculate how many PV watts are needed to generate that many kWh to recharge the battery during a 2-3 hour window when there is no shading by the trees.
  • Post in thread: Grid tie insurance requirements

I didn’t have to do that here in Los Angeles with LADWP
  • Post in thread: Meeting with a solar installer this week

I installed 40yr shingles in 2010 and solar in 2019. As part of their service, the installer included in the contract 1 free removal and reinstallation of the panels if I ever need to reroof. See if any of your installers offered or can include this perk in the contract. Then you won’t feel the...
  • Post in thread: Time to go Solar in central California.

Keep in mind, an 8kW array, for example, can produce around 48kWh/day in the summer in central Cal but only 12kWh on a sunny day in the winter. If you’re avg daily use is 25kWh when the days are short, it will require a lot of panels or halving ones consumption by decreasing energy losses...
  • Post in thread: 12V 50Ah battery recs

Decided to go with a Redodo 12V 50Ah for $199. Now looking for a compact case to install everything.
  • Post in thread: Calif cuts subsidies

“Net energy metering is effectively funded by ratepayers that do not have solar, and the tab makes up about 10% to 20% of the average customer’s monthly bill” This is BS. I buy plenty of grid electricity outside of summer. My winter production on a sunny day is 1/4 that of summer. They’re just...
  • Post in thread: 12V 50Ah battery recs

Good point about the Relion cost. For that much might as well go with the SOK. However a ~50Ah battery is easily 10 pounds lighter than a 100Ah
  • Post in thread: ANTI post. I am not selling anything. I want to prevent the big tech hoging my concept

The US changed their policy several years ago from first-to-invent to first-to-file. You have 12 months from filing a provisional application to filing a formal patent application in order to keep the provisional application’s date as the priority date.
  • Post in thread: RV system, 12v vs 24v Newby Questions

Regarding InstaPots, I measured with a Kill-A-Watt meter tonight the energy consumed to cook a Taiwanese beef stew with 100 minute cooking time under high pressure in a 6 quart cooker: 560Wh. For reference, this is an unusually long cooking time in the Instapot; a chicken stew typically runs...
  • Post in thread: Calif cuts subsidies

Exactly! I wrote the check for my system - no one else did. What’s not fair to provide them excess clean energy during the day and get credited at the same rate as purchased at a later time?
  • Post in thread: ~100kwh for 24/7 off grid home

Regarding passive houses, one issue to be mindful with their super sealed construction is indoor air quality and carbon dioxide build up, for which there are solutions.
  • Post in thread: Off-grif solar system

Parallel panels is good if some get shaded during the day. Series will reach the turn-on threshold voltage of the solar charge controller sooner and subsequently start charging the batteries earlier.
  • Post in thread: Unexpectant disadvantage converting from 12v to 48v??

In the Settings menu, check the value of parameter 36: PV charging current. Should be at default setting of 80A. Someone else had a similar problem and theirs was set to 8A.
  • Post in thread: Best 48 volt inverter/charger

Have you done a calculation of how many kWh you anticipate to consumer daily? How many hours of sunlight per day are there on average during the winter? You may want to “over solar” to ensure that even on partly sunny/cloudy days you can still generate enough electricity for your daily usage.
  • Post in thread: 12V 50Ah battery recs

I’d like to build a small power bank with multiple 12V dc outputs (kinda like a DIY Dometic PLB40) for powering a car fridge, hotlogic food heater, etc. Battery will primarily be charged by a Renogy dc-dc charger while driving which I already own. Looking for recommendation of a 12V 50Ah...

  • Post in thread: Designing car system for road tripping/camping - 12V or 24V?

Targeting for 5.1kWh of battery, I would prioritize resources towards alternator charging over solar.
  • Post in thread: 4000 Watt Holiday Rambler Class A Build

I’m referring to the OP of the RV. Upon closer inspection there appears to be 10 panels with each panel appears to have 2 PV cell arrays, so 10 400W panels?

Notice the jumpers across the pack between #1 & #5
  • Post in thread: Solar BBQ Grill Pergola

24 panels - that’s a big system! I’d like to build one on the rear of the house and calculated I could fit 6 of the 330W Panasonic panels.

No, I was asking Off Gridin’ It
  • Post in thread: Gazebo off-grid solar install and federal tax credit (USA)

My understanding is structural components like a gazebo don’t qualify for the credit.
  • Post in thread: camper boat

Also remember there will be inverter losses, making the 2400Wh consumed by the air conditioner into 2700-2800Wh needed from the battery.
