Thank you. According to the manufacturer, there is a user accessible junction box where I can find both a fuse and some diodes. I will take it down and have a look.
  • Post in thread: 2kW Garage Power Supply

Hi all, I've completed my first project. Location is London England, on my detached garage roof. single Nicesolar 120W monocrystalline panel with MC4 connector cables and a 20W PWM charge controller (starter kit sold on Amazon, the listing is now gone) I built an approximately 60˚ frame out of...
  • Post in thread: Searching for: Mega fuse holder that bolts directly to battery terminal

There are a couple simple products available, so that you can screw a MRBF directly onto a battery terminal. There is a straight-through design, and a 90˚ design: https://www.almsolutions.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1776...
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Thanks, I park outdoors. The panel would not work inside :)
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

I'm almost sure now that I've brought this problem upon myself, ironically by trying to maximize the amount of dashcam parking recording time. By setting the low-voltage cut-off to the lowest value, my AGM battery is always at a low SOC and never recovers. I'll set it instead to the highest...

By the way, @sunshine_eggo your comments are incredibly detailed and helpful. I really appreciate that.
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Thanks Sam, That would work to run the camera, but it would still be a concern how that battery would get charged. If the deep-cycle battery were purely charged from solar, then I'd agree that is a pretty good solution.
  • Post in thread: Dead short fuse trip experiment using an MRBF fuse

The weak point is clearly the primary switch. Reference: Youtube, video ywaTX-nLm6Y at 1:48, "100 Car Batteries Wired in Parallel". I wonder if winding a longer conductor into a coil would grant more of a "soft start" to the high current flow. Allowing for a less-exciting test, but your...
  • Post in thread: "Washers in the current path" - and an audit of my DC system

Thanks, I never thought about it. I will check all my connections, as well as test with the thermal camera of the system while my vacuum is running.
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Thanks very much. Your observation matches my suspicion exactly. The car is from January 2012 and I received it earlier this year with its original battery. I replaced it with a new Lexus battery, the spec being S55D23R. It is Panasonic, I think 51Ah.
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

I can stop you there - I'm not :) I drive it at least once a week to the grocery store, but it is true this car doesn't get a lot of use. It is 12 years old and only has 27k miles.
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Thank you very much! This dashcam, the specification says "Parking Mode (WiFi Off / GPS Off / 2CH) : 285mA / hour" Now leaving aside what an "Ampere per hour" may be ;) I guess that is 0.285 * 12V = 3W. If we have a low SOC battery in the system, I am not sure I agree that my goal should be to...
  • Post in thread: Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75-10: What exact size screwdriver?

Thank you, I had no idea! That's an easy fix, for me to snip off the ferrules again.
  • Post in thread: Methods to attach MRBF fuse holder to SAE battery post

Thank you very much for your reply. I had a shipping delay in getting my fuse holders, and so I ordered dual MRBF holders on Amazon for next-day delivery (as the safety improvement project was held up on just those two pieces). The result is what you can see here...
  • Post in thread: "Washers in the current path" - and an audit of my DC system

Do you mind if I ask about this advice in your signature? I have a number of cables with crimped lugs, screwed down onto threaded posts with washers. That's washers in the current path, yes? Should I actually consider removing the manufacturer-provided washers? Any chance you can point to...
  • Post in thread: PV panel no longer working

Well, anybody got their popcorn ready? Iinside the junction box is worse than I was expecting. The crimps are bad. The one that pulled out clearly overheated first. The cable easily pulled out with a gentle tug. The sealing nut wasn't tightened. The cable itself, I counted the conductors and...
  • Post in thread: PV panel no longer working

I put it back together, practicing my crimps with the many mistakes I made on the way. (and yes, I tightened that loose sealing nut) Now the open circuit voltage is as expected, 19-20V in overcast weather. The closed circuit current however, is low, only 0.3A. So, I don't think my fix suffices...
  • Post in thread: 12V system review - temperatures, voltage drop

Hi all, I've recently set up a 2kW inverter with a single 130Ah battery and this is charged by a single 170W solar panel. The design purpose of my system is to allow occasional use of power tools or the shop-vac in my garage. The original system I put together had poor quality cables bundled...

  • Post in thread: Fuse testing

TLDR, at 4:10 the Victon Energy 100A fuse doesn't blow until 240A! There must have been a whole batch of fuses stamped with the wrong value.
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Thank you, this makes sense. There are a few obstructions in the rear shelf but the good news is, that window sits at a very low angle. I have two rectangular spaces, about 46cm x 25cm, to work with. That's a little too narrow for a typical 10W square panel. I might need something custom. If I...
  • Post in thread: PV panel no longer working

Thank you, I was wondering about those small specks of what look like rusted iron filings. This is mounted on a galvanized steel frame which I built quickly, including filing the edges and so I easily may have done this myself. It also could be organic splatter from work of the gardener. Plants...

Hey @Sennen, may I ask one more question about the Wirefly crimper? These two dies, A and A3 shown here: https://wirefyshop.com/products/wirefy-individual-crimping-dies?variant=39469416710223 (A3) https://wirefyshop.com/products/wirefy-individual-crimping-dies?variant=32414154358863 (A) With...

  • Post in thread: Looking for a 12VDC fuse block that takes bare wire feed-through into screw terminals

I'm looking for a nice quality fuse block, but I don't want to commit to crimping blade connectors or ring terminals onto everything. I really would like to connect in bare wires and just screw them down. I'm finding it very difficult to find... anything that doesn't rely on these crimped...
  • Post in thread: "Washers in the current path" - and an audit of my DC system

So, I've undertaken an inventory of all my cables and connectors. My fuse box, 50mm^2 cables, lugs, crimpers, fuses, etc. etc. have all come in, but I am still waiting for my battery fuse holders which should arrive Tuesday. I did a review of all my connections and corrected a few instances of...
  • Post in thread: Can I use a battery isolator to top up my car battery?

Hello forum, System Design I have a Lexus HS250h. This car has a Toyota hybrid system similar to a Prius. The system includes a high voltage traction battery which is used to store energy for vehicle movement, and also a 12V AGM battery which is used to power on the control logic and high...
  • Post in thread: Methods to attach MRBF fuse holder to SAE battery post

I've got a battery with SAE lead battery terminal posts that I want to protect with MRBF "cube" fuses. Since the primary purpose of these is to reduce the risk of a metal tool short-circuiting the battery terminals, I intend to fuse both the positive and negative terminals. "B" end of the...
  • Post in thread: Methods to attach MRBF fuse holder to SAE battery post

Is this type of stacking even possible? Note: the product photo is doctored to show how fuses might be stacked. I tried to visually estimate the height of that threaded post and marked it with the red line.
  • Post in thread: PV panel no longer working

Hello all, I have a simple setup with a single 120W monocrystalline panel, a charge controller and a 130Ah lead-acid battery. There's also an inverter which I only turn on as needed, e.g. to run a power tool. After working adequately for 5 months or so, I found that my PV output is displayed...
