  • Post in thread: bms heat generation

I have my batteries in a sealed and insulated cabinet. Does the bms generate any measurable amount of heat? It's in the basement on a concrete slab. Should I put it outside the box or is it ok inside? The box is almost the exact dimensions of the cells. It's a sp17s005 16s bms from BHU.
  • Post in thread: Dumb heating element and water pump

Ok i'm tossing all preconceived knowledge out and starting from scratch. I have solar panels. I want a heating element that can make hot water. I do not want batteries. Can I connect panels directly to heating elements? If not, is there some controller that will let me do that. This is a...
  • Post in thread: ring terminals

I had that thought after I posted. Ring terminals will be here saturday.
  • Post in thread: Should i top balance now or wait?

3 responses and 3 different answers. Sweet. They're 280ah batteries and i have no idea what SOC they are. I was thinking of taking them to 3.45 or 3.55 and then battery assembly. Something I can do after hours, where daylight is more building and going to home depot. And yes, i'll be doing all...
  • Post in thread: How does it work

I'm a jump first, look later type of guy, but I'm not sure about this. I have a 3kw growatt, a 15kwh battery, and 4.2kw array. I set my inverter to stop discharging the battery at 20% capacity remaining. The sun sets, the battery is at 100%, the panels go dark, and I'm using 1500w of power. I...
  • Post in thread: Think your car is cool?

I'll get some closer pictures. The specs are not released on how much total capacity it is, or what the wattage it is currently generating at. Hopefully in future software updates, that information is coming.
  • Post in thread: Batteryhookup

Yes but that one has a link to a bunch of different sizes, and I don't know what pitch row is. The diagram lists what should work, but the diagram doesn't match any of the sizes.
  • Post in thread: Should i top balance now or wait?

What's the best way to drain them to 80% given their capacity?
  • Post in thread: Batteryhookup

Ok I have half as many bus bars as I need. Where can I get more for cheap? I am searching the wrong thing on amazon. This is only for top balancing them. Alterntaively, I have some 12ga steel in the shop that I can take and slice up and drill holes in. Problem is it's galvanized. Will that...
  • Post in thread: Batteryhookup

I don't know what to measure to get pitch row. I've googled it and not come up with a clear answer.
  • Post in thread: Do you own an EV and charge with solar?

One of my biggest motivations of building out a solar system is getting truely off grid, and that means everything, vehicles included. Which means I need sufficient production to also charge a vehicle. My current system I'm building is 4.2kw with a 3k inverter and 15kwh battery, but once...
  • Post in thread: Dumb heating element and water pump

Right now it's just the manifold capped off holding pressure. I can rig up a pump pretty easily to circulate water, just the main problem is making it warm. You have a point, I should just experiment with ac power first. But it's not good for the long term. Even if a 1000w heating element is...
  • Post in thread: Should i top balance now or wait?

I was hoping there was some discharge tool that could be set to measure watts and automatically shut off at some point. I'm surprised there isn't already.
  • Post in thread: Batteryhookup

I mean the ones between batteries, they're just flat pieces of metal with holes in them, they shouldn't be expensive.
  • Post in thread: China Installed More Solar Panels Last Year Than the U.S. Has in Total

If it's accurate, then that's good. But I have a hard time believing their claims considering all the propaganda that comes out. They also claim to be the leader of ev production, while hundreds of thousands of EV's rot in an EV graveyard. Out of every 1000 vehicle registrations submitted, only...

Where can I buy a discounted fisker?
  • Post in thread: Batteryhookup

Steel conducts, so I'm trying to avoid that as a building material. I was under the impression that the fire risk was non-existant with these batteries. Yes i know there's high current and that makes wires hot and can catch fire. In the closet I was going to use 3/4 board as a shelf. 3/4 has a...
  • Post in thread: Hello, i have questions

I didn't think about wind getting under the panels on the garage roof. But i have hurricane ties on the trusses, trusses are 16" OC, plywood on that, then 13' steel panels ontop, the roof is 1100sq ft and I was planning on basically filling it eventually. But I wanted a smaller scale system on...
  • Post in thread: Hello, i have questions

Hello, i have many plans for solar and power. I have an engineering background and am pretty handy. I just built my garage, and had the trusses engineered to take 6000lb of solar panels, but I want to start small first. First, I'm going to build a trellis off my back porch that I want to hold...
  • Post in thread: Battero Tech BT280 3.2V 280Ah LiFePO4 Cells - US$55.00 _ GobelPower.com

I was just looking at these. What attracted me about them was the $55 price point from china, but shipping to me would have been $17xx in total for 18 cells. Now they have america stock, 18 cells ships for free to me for $16xx, which is a super deal. I say 18 cells because I know they're grade...
  • Post in thread: Hello, i have questions

I don't think i'm looking to add batteries now, but I want the ability to add them down the line. That's interesting that a 12v panel has closer to 19v, that's considerable and may change design. Grid tie is the way to go from what I understand. I use a lot of electricity, my bill is...
  • Post in thread: Oukitel P2001 Portable Power Station annoying relay click and beep

I recently bought the oukitel and paired it with 2 240w sharp panels in series to power my deep freeze. It's been working great, with one exception. In the evening, when there is just barely any light, the panel input is registering 000 watts, but a trickle is flowing through periodically. Any...
  • Post in thread: Dumb heating element and water pump

Standard heating elements are AC though, where panels produce DC. I know they're just resistors that get warm, but I wasn't sure what would happen if i connect dc to the element designed for ac. Not a bad idea though, i have metal buckets. what's the worst that can happen. I'm just hoping I...
  • Post in thread: Dumb heating element and water pump

Peco is the power company. Yes, it's a 50/50 mix with water and RV anti-freeze, water is just a bit of an oversimplification. I heat my house with wood. It's a bit of a pain. Felling tree's, cutting them up, splitting the wood, seasoning the wood. I'm looking for less maintenance and less...
  • Post in thread: Dumb heating element and water pump

I'm in eastern PA, it definitely gets cold. I'm going to be building out a better system next summer, I was just hoping to get some relief this winter with a system i could reuse the components of when i build something bigger. Around here 240w panels are $30-60. I have 18 sitting in the shop...
  • Post in thread: No Inverter Setup

You need an mppt to normalize the voltage off the panels. Panels give off anything from 0-voc voltage. https://www.amazon.com/Victron-SmartSolar-Charge-Controller-Bluetooth/dp/B075NQQRPD/ Why do you need lights if it's daylight?
  • Post in thread: GROWATT SPF 3000TL function questions

Found this in the manual. So it looks like it can basically operate in UPS mode. I think this is a great way to break down the barrier to entry for solar. No massive investment for batteries, and no big agreement for grid tie, just a half dozen panels outside. No need to do the big...
