  • Post in thread: Letter from ABYC President re LiFePo4 safety on boats

Any high current battery is dangerous. LFP is no more or no less dangerous then a high current SLA bank
  • Post in thread: alternator charging a bank that solar charger is also connected too-- any issues on this?? (lead bank)

In a big battery the terminal voltage is entirely dictated by the battery chemistry. It’s not dictated by the charge sources. During bulk mode the batteries resistance is far lower then the charge sources output resistance , so all changes sources will contribute as much current as they can...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Rejected by PG&E in California

If the authorities wish to force grid use , ban grid tied micro generation or take his guns then unless he’s happily shooting the LEOs that turn up on his doorstep to enforce whatever the laws of the land apply. Then he’s spouting nonsense. These types of puerile “ from my cold dead hands BS”...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Rejected by PG&E in California

Easily done if the necessity arises. But not relevant here.
  • Post in thread: Coming Energy Prices …..

Most aid currently is in direct shipment of arms to Ukraine , the key driver is the desire to halt Russian aggression so as to demonstrate that rolling into other peaceful countries isn’t acceptable and in fairness it’s something that should have been demonstrated to GWB also. Sure sure all...
  • Post in thread: Cons of going off grid?

Sadly I go back to my grid connected house
  • Post in thread: Should I earth ground this system?

In general localised ground rods are a bad idea , as variable resistances or wire faults can lead to unexpected fault paths. If your house has a protective earth system , I’d simply extend that as a ground , irrespective of not being grid tied.
  • Post in thread: Colorado utility company locks people out of their thermostats

I agree , the privatisation of power generation has not benefited consumers it should be reversed , major utilities should all be in public hands
  • Post in thread: .

That invertor is not a LF invertor in the conventional sense. It’s a HF invertor The bigger metal cases Phoenix invertors have what Victron describe as hybrid HF , ie both a HF switching stage and a LF drive stage. Victron don’t make a conventional LF invertor to my knowledge.
  • Post in thread: Your Charge Controller "Charges" the line between your Battery.

Famously “ you canna change the laws of physics You have not demonstrated that , either you have a wiring fault , or mis understanding the whole thing Your not getting more power , it can only give you what’s it’s rated for The last line has certain benefits , I’ll give you that. There’s...
  • Post in thread: Best LifePo4 charge controller settings known to man for Maximum Service life and Minimum battery stress!!! 5,000-10,000+ cycles?

I fully agree , but my point was the OP asked for maximum life and minimum battery stress. That’s why I laid out that strategy I fully accept that many people trade off less then optimum arrangements for reduced cycle life , given even the reduced cycle life maybe longer then their...
  • Post in thread: Your Charge Controller "Charges" the line between your Battery.

None of your pictures confirms anything your saying , if you have excessive voltsage drop along the cable , that’s needs to be fixed , voltage drop shouldn’t exceed 1% , ie at nominal 12v , that’s 0.12V Again other then wire resistance issues the voltage is the same everywhere on a wire ...
  • Post in thread: Coming Energy Prices …..

The local milita are the mob turning up to take away your stuff and my AR15 AR16 mistake is merely my dyslexia. I’ve more experience with an M1 anyway People with a few guns simply don’t stop loads of other angry people who end up with guns too The point is you can’t expect to hoard resources...
  • Post in thread: Coming Energy Prices …..

There is no evidence that microgenerstion is a “ good thing “ overall , energy regulators have huge concerns and power engineers question the whole stability issue. AC motors are efficient. Power conversion losses to dc offset some gains. To allow good food , we need to make it cheap...
  • Post in thread: BMS design for boats

Hope this block diagram is visible note it’s not electrically perfect This bms is based on a battery by battery basis in this case each battery is 4 series cells resulting in a nominal 12v 100Ah battery The bms has a high side mosfet disconnect and uses an ATTINY connected to a dedicated...
  • Post in thread: Coming Energy Prices …..

I think using a complete piece of fiction to illustrate any perspective is rather ridiculous
  • Post in thread: How to best power a camera on DC with fluctuating inputs.

these are specifically buck boost and I use them for situations precisely like the Op wants , ie a stable 12v , ie my Android downstairs helm information system repeater , various Arduinos boards , a raspberry pi etc I think I have 6 or 7 on the boat at the moment yes Ali takes about 6-8...
  • Post in thread: School me on 240v (single, split phase)

US split phase as far as viewing it both hots and equating that are an appliance level with European 230vac ( stop using 240) is in fact an identical power system Since European appliances using an unearthed appliance ( common for lamps , and double insulated power supplies etc ) are...
  • Post in thread: New NEC code makes it impossible for DIY systems to be compliant

Im sorry , my point on a solar forum was that poor people have very little capital or access to capital ( or expensive loans ). Hence unlike those with access, who can lower ongoing electricity bills by deploying that capital on PV schemes. This is inaccessible to the poor. Hence we need a...
  • Post in thread: Does Solar Pay for Itself? Is it worth it?

They tend to drive captured bulldozers through those. Then they eat your family it seems. So the TV movies suggest anyway
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Rejected by PG&E in California

The vast majority of people being contented to a point , so that society sleeps peacefully at night. I believe fundemebt rights like income irrelevant access to housing food medical and education are then respected , this requires tax collection , order maintenance etc or human greed wlll out...
  • Post in thread: 12v BMS design. What would you like to see

Yes I like that product but I can’t change aspects of its operation , I’m hoping they will be at METS in November I want a distributed drop in battery style BMS. , ie i want a 300Ah 12V . System , I’m going to build it from 3x4S 100aH Cells. The BMS will monitor each cell AND and every cell for...
  • Post in thread: How to best power a camera on DC with fluctuating inputs.

yes they are on Aliexpress as they are essentially a repackaging of the ones I mentioned , you pay for all that aluminium https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000737946862.html?
  • Post in thread: Coming Energy Prices …..

    Hopefully triple it
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Rejected by PG&E in California

A perspective not shared by many , state run systems are like anything somevate great some are mediocre. Simply being commercial or privately owned doesn’t mean it’s well run either
  • Post in thread: Can I run a grounding wire 150ft from PV array to inverters?

Most codes do not support multiple connected earth ground points within a domestic situation. This is present a particular ground point carrying ALL ground fault currents , to a particular ground point. This could include your neighbours ground faults. Hence if you install a separate...
  • Post in thread: School me on 240v (single, split phase)

While I fully accept your perspective , it’s largely based merely on what you are used to, as opposed to the real comparative reality. As I said unpolarised 230 is identical to split phase electrically. After that it’s a matter of case by case so to speak.
