Yeah I'm super jealous.
You listed the distance to the best big box store to buy solar panels at in nautical miles. Hopefully I get this boat done and will see for myself someday, but your part of the world sounds cool af bud.
You know, as someone who found this thread while posting a question about eg4 batteries before buying I gotta say it's REALLY cool to see people from said company paying attention to, engaging with, and troubleshooting problems.
You folks should have my order Friday next.
Also, it's important to remember the existing/old drive system was rated at 52 ft lbs at 2000rpm *at the crank* then put through a 2:1 reduction, resulting in the actual prop spinning 1000rpms with 104 ft lbs pushing it. Those are existing parameters (104 ft lbs / 1000 rpm) I'm trying to match...
Hi all.
I've been speccing and soucing a system I plan to put on a boat. Have 48v310ah lifepo4 diy planned, powering an electric motor kit from thunderstruck ev.
I was intending to use 8x renogy monocrystalline 100w panels (as I already own 4) but some budget room opened up and am considering...
Ah yes I forgot hydrodynamic generation (yes controller is capable). Hard to get exact numbers, but from looking at other people's systems I estimate around 200-350w while sailing.
The whole charging issue is really pretty tricky. Boat gets anchored in the Lee (hiding from wind) of some...
Ah yeah. Here in Wisconsin the thought of buying solar equipment in a store isn't a thing. I'm likely the only person in county (and maybe neighboring counties) who does anything but full grid power.
Pertaining to power requirements, firstly this is a part of a hybrid system incorporating...
After the 1st post above mentioning rec bms I very briefly looked into them, outside of the lack of restrictions to amperage flow what advantages do they offer? Is there a decent write up or review on here or elsewhere that'd be relevant?
Thanks
Awesome that is definitely good to know, so is it - for say a 200a unit - 200 charge 200 discharge? Or is it mixed as in 180a discharge 20a (simultaneous) discharge?
Project is an ev boat, definitely intend on occasionally using the motor while the sun is out. Sorry for the noobishness xD...
Its a Formosa 36, big and fat and pretty xD.
I toyed with the idea of getting cells instead of a premade battery, is there a preferred make/brand? Im pretty confidant i can fit a bank out of cells together with only moderate youtubeducation.
Aye I'll give it a try.
Just filled out contact form for local solar installer. Literally 97 question form all so they can pre qualify leads to overcharge. Very schmarmy.
Yeah my original plan was 8x 100w panels, just want to run numbers on a larger panel (similar output) array. Less panels total means less failure points in a salt marine setting, plus all new. Still very feasible to go this route.
Hey yep took me awhile to reply. Yeah project is an inboard 48v dc motor for a big 18000lb liveaboard.
Using the old diesels power rating @ rpm vs new motors power rating (and amp draw) @ similar ram (after gearing) I'm fairly confident that a 60 amp draw will equate to a similar hull speed...
Hey all,
I'm considering buying multiple 48v100ah eg4 batteries and wiring them in Parallel.
My question is when I do that is the (100a) discharge rating of each batteries bms added together (as in 2p has 200a rating)?
My head says yes but my wife says make sure. I've emailed them but no...
Ah shite. Yep was reading on the left.
Dude thank you. 1000a rec bms it is.
I'm gonna have to redo my range projections and likely my bank design to compensate.
This is why this forum is awesome, you just saved me x wasted expense and y crappy headaches.
Thank you.
Ah. Interesting...
Right out of the gate, I really appreciate your time, thank you.
Now so I understand:
if I'm actively - consistently (for this convo, unchangingly) using the electric motor at an rpm that requires 180 amps - and (simultaneously) my solar array and mppt are producing let's...
Awesomeness thank you guys very kindly,
After reviewing the info directed to me here I've decided to pull the trigger on it. Since it'll be in a mobile application (and it's cheap enough) I'll probably order a spare as well thus assuaging any lingering durability issues.
Thanks again for all...
Hey final thing, how do I tell how many charge amps bms can handle? Just realized I don't think I've seen that parameter listed anywhere... or is the "200a" for both charge and discharge?
OK now I'm freaking myself out lol. They can indeed charge and discharge simultaneously correct?
Dude using that graph what are your thoughts on swapping the belt pullys from 1:1 to 5:1 (5000 motor/1000 shaft), seems like that'd be more efficient. I suppose that'd be reducing effective torque from 105 to ~15×5 though. Hmm.
Well again the 60a number is supposed to equate to cruising speed. Was a md2b, rated 16hp max. Hand crank start. So yeah that's about right, maybe a tad slow but it's a baseline #.
I've mathed this out so many times before buying the motor kit, I'm pretty sure the guy at thunderstruck and I agreed that relative efficiency gains vs Volvo pretty dramatically reduced rated output requirements, to the tune of like 20%. I have the power output chart pdf somewhere. 60a...
Hey folks,
I'm in the process of refitting and repowering a liveaboard sailboat.
I'm going to be using an electric inboard as auxiliary propulsion. I've purchased a motor kit (controller, gearing, thrust bearing, shaft coupler, throttle, harnesses, belts etc etc oh and ofc a 48v brushless dc...
Yeah I just checked power graph.
Md2b rated 52 ft lbs, had 2:1 reduction. Cruised at 2000 engine rpms.
Hpevs ac-34, 1:1 gearing, rated 105 ft lbs / 70 amps @ 1000 motor rpms.
So yeah, 60 works as cruising speed. Tad slow, tad efficient.
Dam you for making me recheck my design lol ?

is the unit I referenced btw. Plenty of dry places to put it, though salt water air is a thing.
Hey, sorry for delayed reply. Connectivity is spotty on a good day for me.
I've located a vendor and specific cells I need, actually was referred by a different thread on this forum. Going with...
